The End Of The Road For Warcraft Gold Guides.

March 7th, 2010

Sometime soon we are going to see the end of Warcraft gold guides. The idea of looking at a book while playing to find out what to do to make WoW gold are coming to an end.

Let’s face it, reading a PDF document while playing is not really state-of-the-art is it? One minute you are playing, the next clicking on a pile of text trying to work out where to go to grind or farm materials, or what items might be cheap at the Auction house that day.

If you think about it, even the name “guide” is not really what you are after. If you climb a mountain for example a guide is someone who tells you the route and walks with you. Maybe telling you where it’s safe to camp and help carry the equipment.

Don’t get me wrong, a guide is useful, but it doesn’t really do the job for you does it? A guide just, well, guides you.

Then there are the guides that call themselves “systems”. Have you seen these? A system is a procedure you follow, using tools provided to achieve a result. Ok, fine, well the system in these guides seems to be;

1 – Please follow the guide provided.

2 – If unsure refer to part 1.

Yes I know a couple add macro code you can cut and paste. WoW amazing. Like that would have taken you all of five minutes to work out yourself. Ok, I’m being a little harsh. macro code for buying and selling can seem a little intimidating to none coders, but it really is very simple.

If it’s macros you are after, may I direct your attention to Wowwiki. Every possible macro for just about every possible event you can think of in the game. The hard bit is accessing them. Now follow closely. Ready? First you select the macro and “copy” then you go into your Warcraft interface and press “paste” got that? So “copy” then “paste”. Practice it a few times. Man If you bought a guide for auctioneer help and a few macros? You must feel a little sick now. You just paid for free inferior information. Ouch.

You want macros? Great! WoWwiki has a whole section with Warcraft macros, with examples of just about every one you can think of for every character type, race, profession and event in the game. You just copy and paste these straight into the Warcraft GUI. If you bought a “system” guide, then it will be a normal text document, with these two free elements added, then rebadged as a “system”. At least every one I’ve ever read has been like this. If you paid good money for this rehash of free information, then that’s gotta hurt. Sorry.

What Warcraft needs is a real system. Something where you press a button, and the inner workings of your servers’ economy gets ripped open.

Legal, safe and totally conforming to Blizzards terms and conditions. So simple a child could do it.

Imagine, no more grinding, no more farming, no “messin’ and guessin’” at the auction house’ A quick install, then a real system that does everything for you.

Warcraft – We Want More Character Customization!

March 2nd, 2010

Rolling a new character again and I’m feeling a little ambivalent. Looking forward to it on the one had, but a few little niggles keeping me from totally throwing myself into the experience.

Firstly, of course, there is the anticipation of the adventures ahead, mixed in with some little concern that I have done it so many times before that I might well lose interest.

Well, of course I want to. I could wait for all the changes that will come with Cataclysm of course, this will refresh the early levelling process no end.

However, once I actually get into the character generation screen, another problem. The characters themselves. They all seem so limited.

The preset character faces and customization options seem so limited.

Rolling a human really brings it home to me. There seems very little choice, and what choice there is – is between characterizations that really do not appeal to me at all. I mean, this is a face and character I’ll be playing for hour after hour. It would be nice if it was an enjoyable spectacle.

Back in 2005, the limitations were excusable. Both the ability of computers to draw and render good facial expressions was more limited, then there was the issue of broadband speed being generally several factors slower than it is now, making the caching and uploading of many different facial designs an issue.

I’ve also heard people say that it’s all about the armour you have at level 80. I’ll counter that by saying that that’s all starting to seem a bit “samey” to me. Tier 9, Tier 10. Once you’ve seen two human Warlocks with BiS raiding gear, you’ve seen the lot.

Now there are any number of games, many by publishers with a fraction of the resources available to Blizzard, who let you customize everything right down to the shade of pink on your new characters nail polish.

It would be nice if Blizzard gave us similar options for the world’s biggest online game wouldn’t it?

I’ve looked to Cataclysm details and trailers to see if it’s something that looks likely to be on the cards, sadly not at the moment.

5 Reasons Why You Should Get to Level 80 in Warcraft

February 27th, 2010

There are a lot of distractions on the way to getting a character to levelled in Warcraft, but here are five good reasons why you should prioritise this above everything else.

1 – Warcraft is now all about the end game. There is so much content once you get there that you will wonder why it took you so long. Ilevel-200 gear is so “last year”.

2 – You can compete in full blown PvP. Sure there are battlegrounds at every level, but at level 80 they become massive fights with the latest in user controlled vehicles and the greatest rewards in terms of what PvP rep can buy you.

3 – Level 80 for the first time? Or doing it for the tenth? It’s a great feeling. It’s like a rite-of-passage. Now you have made it a whole new world opens up.

4 – Did I forget to mention Cataclysm? While it is true everyone can roll a new character to see around the all new Azeroth, only level 80’s will see all the great new content for levelling between 80 and 85. Blizzard are going out of there way to make every level a unique experience with the latest expansion. But of course it’s only open if you are already at the current cap.

5 – Finally making worthwhile gold. I know some guides tell you that it’s possible to make gold at any level, and to an extent that is true. But at level 80 it becomes so much easier. Just playing the game and selling the loot you pick up will yield around 200 gold per hour on most servers. Don’t go to all that hassle early in the game for a few gold pieces here and there. Your coffers will start to fill up very nicely once you get a level 80; just by playing the game as it should be played.

Ok, the goals of being gold rich and levelling up sometimes seem to get in each others way. They shouldn’t though. There are great new systems to help you succeed in both areas. Not old fashioned e-books and nonsense like that, but new great methods that let you get the gold you want, and spend your time levelling as efficiently as possible.

Good luck, and get to level 80 as quickly as you can!

Gold Domination in Warcraft – A Update for Cataclysm

February 21st, 2010

Balancing the need to progress in Warcraft while also making sure that you have enough gold to be effective is a balance. One that sometimes requires a little help to maintain.

Using the auction house would seem the obvious way. It is a market and you can leverage skills rather than time to do this.

I have just read of a system that uses primarily cross market trading to make gold. That’s comparing the Horde price for any given item with those at Alliance auction houses. You then buy from the cheaper, transfer to another character of the opposite faction (via the neutral auction house) and sell at the market where the price is higher.

Sounds good? Hold on though. There are one or two very big drawbacks with this. Before you consider doing this you need to be aware of them.

Firstly you cannot buy from yourself at an Auction house using a single Warcraft account. You cannot, for example, post an item with a Horde character at a neutral auction house, switch to an Alliance character and pick the item up to market it at the Alliance auction house. The system won’t let you.

You need a second account or a friend to assist you. A second account means actually paying Blizzard for two Warcraft accounts. Having a friend help you means splitting the profits, normally halving them. Not so profitable now is it?

That’s not the end of the problems though. Just buying massive amounts of cheap stock is not going to work straight away. You risk flooding the market, you need a large (and by large I mean several hundred spaces) areas of storage. Your own storage that no-one can steal from, then drip feed to market. Also, this is a common method used by far eastern gold farmers (who have many accounts). You need to be quick. Remember it costs gold to put items on at auction. Flooding the market will end up losing you gold very quickly.

I’m not saying there isn’t a place for cross faction trading, of course there is. But you need to be aware of the potential drawbacks. Imagine buying a gold system, sitting down, and chapter one page one basically tells you to go and buy another Warcraft account and 30 days game time, that’s a shock you don’t want.

Playing the Class in Warcraft – The Hunter’s Approach to Cataclysm

February 18th, 2010

The hunter has always been one of the most versatile classes in Warcraft. Up until late 2008 they could, at a push, perform just about every role in the game. This lead to a lot of arguments when it came to rolling for loot in instances. Hunter’s could – with some degree of honesty – roll “need” for just about every item that dropped

It is the talent spec that decides on the direction a hunter will take in Warcraft. During levelling this can make a big difference to the play experience. Survival spec is to do with keeping foes occupied with traps. Causing damage to several enemies at once. Normally using a pet to help you control enemies rather than tank or DPS them.

Beast Mastery is all about the pet. Specifically tanking and DPS pets. Are you going to stand back and let your pet take the “aggro”? Or would you rather you pet deal more damage? In the past it has even been possible for hunters to have pets “off tank” in easier instances. Some hunters claim they can still do this. I wouldn’t recommend it. At end game the pet will become overwhelmed pretty quickly, but it used to be quite possible.

Marksmanship is a big DPS (damage per second) spec. Now that survival is also a DPS talent tree, it can be difficult to choose between the two if levelling and DPS is the role you want to take.

Decide what kind of pet you are having. Have the sort that compliments your play style. Tank pets such as turtles will keep the enemy occupied better and absorb damage while you provide the killing power from range. Damage dealing pets e.g. cats are less adept at tanking but will provide excellent DPS themselves. Finally cunning pets like spiders are capable of trapping foes themselves.

At end game expect to have to re-learn everything you thought you knew whilst levelling. The expectations on you will be very different. Many hunters become “nukes”, providing massive damage from range.

Hunters then are a great class to level with. They are perhaps the quickest levelling class there is Of course there is a downside to this. End game you will need to compete with a lot of players for spots on raids. There is never a shortage of Hunters. If you want people to beg you to raid with them then become a dedicated healer or good tank. There are a lot of hunters and other DPS classes out there already.

3.3.2 The Frostwing Halls. Warcraft Last Throw of the Dice Until Cataclysm.

February 13th, 2010

Did you know that Frostwing was open? Of course you did. As I write its the 8th February 2010, it’s been open six days now. Apparently one guild has completed it.

Barely a week since opening and some have completed the ten man content. This despite the limited attempts per week that guilds can try it. Frostwing? 10 Man? Done it!

That’s it then. Now we farm Frostwing for, well for nine months. My guild is confident of having it cracked at 10 and 25 by mid March 2010, so we’ll run it probably ten or fifteen times (until people get bored) and by mid April we will be done.

The wait for Cataclysm and 4.0 will be a long one. The most optimistic release dates are October 2010 or autumn (fall) 2010. Six months then with nothing to do.

Me? I certainly won’t be paying subs for six months with no new content to play. I’ll cancel then come back when Blizzard remember that Warcraft is a game of progression. No progression – no play – no pay subs. For me at least it’s that simple.

Does the idea of paying for six months counting your toes appeal to anyone? Ok there are (as people have pointed out to me) plenty of PvP achievements to get, as well us some standard PvE “outdoor” quests etc. But that is missing the point. Many (I hesistate to say the majority – but it might be) play more-or-less exclusively for the end game instances. Yes I know all about PvP , yes I know all about quests etc. But I won’t log in day after day for these things. For me – and many others – It’s high end instances or nothing.

Just a quick note for the guys at Blizzard. Get patch 3.4 out, or release Cataclysm. I reckon June 2010, July at a push. By then even the guilds full of rushed Hunters will have completed the game. The essence of Warcraft is constant progression. No progression? For many that’s not an option they are prepared to pay for.
