1. Friends Are Not Around Forever

Neither my friends at high school nor those at college stand with me after I have moved from UK to South Africa.

Friendship is not forever. My friends are all scattered around UK. It is harsh thing to know but that’s what reality is.

Remember: There are tons of people waiting to befriend with you. Even if you are having few friends right now, you never know what will happen next.

2. You Won’t Always Get What You Want

There was one Christmas that I asked for nothing but some used turntables. I ended up buying it myself with my 10 months of savings.

Things don’t go according to your every wish: people show up late, people disappoint you, things are sold out.

Important Lesson: Don’t look for happiness in material possessions and if things don’t go your way, learn to accept them. Life’s too short to stay miserable.

3. Don’t Expect Love From Everyone

Bushcraft survival refers to the art of using things in nature to survive. This term has been popularized by Ray Mears seen by many on television and also Les Hiddins (The bush Tucker Man), well known in Australia and other countries in the southern hemisphere. It involves the use of bushcraft knives, wild edible plants, natural shelters, fire survival, water procurement and purification, natural cordage and many other skills. Although many of these skills have been all but forgotten, mountain men and of course the American Indians knew them well.

First, these survival skills are useful for outdoor hobbyists who like backpacking, hiking, fishing or hunting. Things can go wrong out in the wilderness leaving a person in a potentially dangerous situation if they don’t know how to keep themselves alive using only what they have at hand. It certainly seems irresponsible to engage in these kinds of activities without being prepared to deal with the unexpected.

However, in the new age of man made disaster scenarios, especially related to terrorism, these skills are not only useful for everyone, but they could mean the difference for an individual’s or even family’s ability to survive a catastrophic event.

When one hears the word Laser, they immediately think of various surgeries that are performed throughout the world using this technique. The back, the eye and many other parts of the human body have surgery using this technique. It consists of using a ray of light that cuts through tissue cleanly, making the surgery much easier and safer. In addition to this usage, there is now a Laser flashlight.

Many inventors worked on the Laser theory over the years but it is believed that this has all been possibly by an invention by Albert Einstein called Stimulated Emission. This is the basic working structure of the Laser. As its possibilities were realized, it became part of almost all new developments, including many which can be found in the household.

Why do you need a home disaster kit? You need it for the unexpected events in life. You might not think that you live in an area that has the potential to put you in a survival situation, but you might be wrong. I live near Dallas, Texas and as I write this, my yard is full of snow. Not just a little, but the most snow ever recorded. Currently there is over nine inches and it is still falling.

What if I lose the electricity due to downed power lines? The temperature outside is in the 30’s and our house would probably start getting cold real quick. No worries, I have gas heat. Too bad the fan that moves the air is electric. My stove is electric and I don’t have a cord of wood stacked outside for the fireplace. Are you beginning to see that I could be in potential survival situation?

It’s cold outside and my house provides the shelter I need. Having the items I need to survive the next few days could make the difference between an inconvenience and a real disaster. Having a survival kit for emergencies like this allows me to concentrate on the basics without having to search for the tools and supplies I need. Some of the basic items I keep in my kit are listed below.

Water – Each person needs a minimum of two liters per day. If the electricity has gone out, the city’s pumps could be down. I could melt some of the snow outside, but my electric stove is not working due to the power loss. Having the ability to start a small fire would allow me to melt the water. However, having some water stored is an easier option and keeps me inside the house. The water can be in your own containers or pre-packaged, such as bottled water. Just make sure you have enough available and rotate it as needed.

Food – Not only is this necessary to keep our energy up, it can also be a great comfort. When packing for a survival kit, consider foods that have a long shelf life and can be prepared with minimal effort. Canned foods are a good option as long as you aren’t relying on an electric can opener. MRE and freeze-dried options can provide a wide variety of options with little to no preparation. I keep some of both in my bag because of the variety.

Shelter – Although I am staying in the house, the temperature might be falling. Make sure you have some extra blankets or sleeping bags available, enough for everyone. Although these don’t need to be in your disaster bag, they should be readily available.

Tools – Even if your garage is full of tools, could you use them without power? Consider the following as a minimum and keep them in your survival bag. A multi-tool can be used as a can opener and other unexpected situations. A set of flashlights, candles or glowsticks can provide the lighting you need and provide comfort at night. I use crank-type flashlights, in addition to candles and glowsticks so I don’t have to rely on batteries. Matches or lighters are essential for starting a fire or lighting candles. Be sure to place matches in a container to keep them dry and ready for use. A radio is also a great idea for keeping up with news/weather information. Just like my flashlight, I have a radio that uses a crank for power. This eliminates the need for extra batteries. As a final item, I like to keep a small notepad for talking/leaving notes.

Remember to assemble these items in a box, bag or other type of container that can be stored in an accessible area and resist the urge to borrow from it. Although this is a very basic list, I hope it helps you think about those items you might need based on your specific needs. You probably have most, if not all the items you need. A little preparedness planning now could really make life easier during an unexpected event.

The Nintendo Wii has a family friendly image and not one often associated with the survival horror genre. Cursed Mountain is set to change all that. While light on the guts and gore of next-gen games, atmosphere and storytelling do the shocking here.

You begin with the news that your brother Frank has gone searching the mountain for an item called Terma, a Buddhist artefact. Your mission is to find him, and on the way navigate the story filled with Eastern philosophy and Buddhism. It’s original stuff for a game, make no mistake.

The exclusive release on the Wii has done wonders for the graphics in Cursed Mountain. Rather than having toned down the gore because of the platform’s capabilities, the developers have simply opted to spend the time making the best adventure they can and it shows.

As well as the graphics in the game, the controls make the most of the Wii. Unlike ported games where developers have clearly tried to work out how to make some sort of gimmick out of the control system, Cursed Mountain has every part of the game developed from the ground up with the controller in mind, whether it’s walking across a chasm bridge or fighting off malevolent spirits.

It’s not a one dimensional route to the top of the mountain either, as you can choose your route. As you progress upwards, the game offers more puzzles and challenges, such as the depleting amount of oxygen in the air the higher you get, making you race from one oxygen bottle to the next.

Combining new gameplay and puzzles as it goes, together with finally some decent graphics on the Wii, and a control system that makes sense for the controller, Cursed Mountain is worth consideration of any grown-up gamer.

Cursed Mountain is out 4th September 2009 and is only available for the Wii.
