A Relaxation Technique

July 27th, 2010

Camping trips are enjoyed by people looking to spend time outdoors, and experience nature. That’s what most people are looking for, at least. Some friends of ours kept telling us how much they hated camping trips, and how they enjoy working much more than go on a trip, but twice a year, they went on their camping trips. We never knew where they went, but most lasted for several days.

You might be wondering why, and frankly, so were we. They just shrugged their shoulders when we asked them why they continued going if they hated it so much. We also asked them if we could join them, on special occasions, and see if we can’t make it more fun for them. A simple “no” was all we got from them.

They had also bought this big tent, saying it was very important to have a good tent when going camping. I agreed, but when I told them it was fairly large and would probably be difficult to carry, they just laughed at me. I figured they must know what they are doing, with the large number of trips they’ve gone on.

It turns out they did know what they were doing, as I found out on the next night. They were supposed to leave on one of their camping trips, but I heard them making noise in the hallway. A quick look showed me they were going to the top of the building, instead of exiting it.

Following them led me to the roof, where they had their big tent all set up, a large collection of magazines, and a 8gb zune player connected to some speakers. This appeared to be their “camping” spot. I decided to let them know I was there, and told them how much I liked their player.

Their reaction had me laughing uncontrollably, and they soon joined me. They explained to me that this was “their” camping spot, and it was very relaxing. They finally decided to let us accompany them on their “trips” and now, from time to time, two big tents can be seen from the street, on top of our building.

An Athlete’s Benefits Of Having Few Fans

July 2nd, 2010

August 12th, ‘09 was a beautiful, sunny Wednesday morning in Canada. Because I was working at the Rogers Cup, I got admission to the grounds and had specifically asked for the day off so I could go see all the professionals’ practices. It was undeniably a loaded schedule with the best 10 in action during the day.

At eleven that morning, a buddy and I headed over toward Court 4 where the world’s No.1, Roger Federer, was set to arrive at within a half hour. Already jam packed with about a few hundred people, there was hardly any room to move.

As the time neared, the place was filled with people who enthusiastically waited to catch a glimpse of the best to ever play the game. With the sun scorching at 35 degrees celsius, we watched him warm up and we saw him hitting balls. To be frank, it was relatively unexciting and was scheduled to go on for 2 hours.

So, gradually, we squeeze out of the crowd and come to an open spot. I look up at Court 4 on the other side to see a tall, lanky player dressed in a pink Nike T-shirt and white shorts pounding a few balls. I try to look closer and indeed came to see it was Juan Martin Del Potro.

As he arrived at the exit gate, there were six people waiting for him to have his autograph and he did sign. As he signed my picture and went on to my pal, I said “I wish you the best of luck in your match later.”

He turned around and had a huge smile on his face and said “Thank you so very much for your support.” He seemed like he was really happy with what I had said to him.

As he won the US Open this week, the irony of this situation just entered my thoughts. The fact that basically not a soul was in attendance to watch him and Federer had a ton of people. Every now and then, it is better to be left alone than to be constantly followed.

Del Potro played a fabulous game this week and is fully worthy of his title. Well done!

Becoming A Millionaire With A Piece Of Straw

December 1st, 2009

A millionaire created through giving!

Given below is a mythological story from Japan about the beauty of giving to others and it tells us how we can receive the most perfect gifts when we’re giving and grateful of what we own.

This is the folk tale.

A long time ago, there lived a penniless young farmer. Nothing that he did turned out to be profitable. He was completely impoverished without any money, without anyone to help and nothing to eat. One night, totally at his wit’s end, he went to a shrine and sat near the altar and pleaded to Gods to show him what to do.

“I have always been sincere and industrious, but all my industriousness never became beneficial to me. Where have I gone wrong?”

He slept at the feet of the deity after having put that question. In the morning, just as he woke up, one of the Gods of his dream appeared before him enveloped in a brilliant golden light. The voice of the God resounded in his mind.

“When you wake up today, treasure the very thing you have in your hand and keep giving it generously to others on your way,” the God whispered.

The farmer opened his eyes. There were many things that he wanted to ask but he managed to pull himself up and tried to remove the confusion of the strange dream. But there seemed to be a piece of straw in his hand. It must have remained stuck on his dress while he worked in his land.

He almost threw it away, but stopped short of doing it recollecting what God had said about it. He seated himself again and stared at the straw in his hand.

He sat for a while unable to comprehend what all that meant. He did not know how a piece of straw can turn out to be useful. Then he saw a wasp hovering around. After a while the wasp settled on one end of his straw. He caught it and with the help of a thread from his clothes, tied it to the straw. And with a wasp at the end of his straw, he went on his way.

He had proceeded only a bit when he saw a woman and her child coming from the opposite direction. The child was crying. When he wished them, the boy saw the straw in the farmer’s hand with a wasp dangling at the end. The child was curious and asked the farmer if he could have it. He was about to refuse when he remembered how God had told him to cherish what he had and also at the same time to give to others what he had. So he offered the straw to the child. The mother became happy since the child stopped crying because of the gift. In return for the straw the lady gave the man three tangerines.

The man continued on his way. After a while he started feeling hungry and wanted to eat one of the tangerines. But he stopped short of doing it and remembered that he had to gift things to others, not give it to himself.

The farmer was going over a steep hill and on the way he saw a merchant sitting under a tree. The man had a wooden box near him. The farmer wished the man. He appeared to be very tired. He saw the tangerines the farmer held and asked him if he would give it to him. The merchant told the farmer that he was very thirsty.

The farmer was also quite thirsty having walked for a long time during the heat of the day but he offered all the tangerines to the merchant. The merchant ate the three tangerines and regained his strength. He was very grateful for the kindness of the farmer and opened the wooden box next to him. There were rolls of hand dyed silk fabric. The merchant handed him one roll, thanked him and walked off.

The farmer walked again and continued on the same path. After a while he found a river from which he drank water. He felt recharged. He went forward with more energy and a feeling of ease.

He walked for some more time but did not come across anyone else. He felt that the silk might be that which would bring him something good. So he chose to go to a town in the vicinity and trade the fabric.

But just as he went around the corner, he saw in front of him a band of fighters. One of the fighters who looked liked the head of the band stood near a horse that was lying on the earth. The farmer heard the leader talking to his men.

“It does not appear that this horse would live much. We will have to leave it here. Nurse it well and catch up with me.” With this the leader jumped on to another horse and rode off, moving out of people’s sight.

The remaining soldiers were left discussing what to do about it. They were reluctant to kill the animal but they did not have much of a choice. At last one of them took out a sword.

The farmer pleaded with them not to do that. He said he was ready to look after the animal. He said they can have the bolt of silk for letting him care for the horse. They agreed to the deal and left the place quickly.

The farmer stood there with the horse that was in its death throes. He felt he might have got it all wrong and that he was not destined to be wealthy. Then he thought of the river that he had come across on the way.

He immediately went back to the stream, took off his shirt and soaked it in the fresh water so he could give water to horse. He returned to the horse still lying there on the ground. The farmer squeezed the wet cloth over the horse’s mouth. Very soon the horse began to respond and regained its consciousness, so the farmer pulled it up with all his might.

Once the horse could stand, the farmer was able to take it to the river. The horse drank directly from the river and the farmer also led it to the patches of grass nearby. Very soon the animal was rejuvenated.

The farmer now had a companion. They journeyed together, the horse in front, and the farmer panting behind to keep up with it. They traveled for miles in that manner. At last, as the sun was about to set, the animal came to a stop just in front of a rather big house. When the farmer drew alongside, the horse pushed him in the direction of the gate with its snout.

As the farmer approached the gate, the doors swung open and to his surprise, an old man appeared. The old man was rushing outside and was looking a little pale. He noticed the farmer and the horse standing by the gate.

The old man asked the farmer what he was doing. The farmer said he was looking for a place to stay the night. The old man said he was going to the town for an urgent matter. He asked the farmer if he minded looking after his house until he returned. He said he might not be able to come back for a little while.

The old man looked as if he was in a hurry, so the farmer told him he can take his horse. The old man was very grateful about it and immediately left with the horse. As he left, he said something totally unexpected to the farmer.

“If I do not come back in three years’ time, this house belongs to you.”

As you possibly deduced, the old man did not come back.

So the farmer lived happily ever after in the old man’s big house with kind-hearted neighbours around and a land rich in good crops. He always kept in mind the rule that he should give to others what he had.

Thank you for going through this story. And what is the message that it contains?

There is always a pattern to things. If the venture of getting can be converted into the venture of giving, our life would pour forth with greater profusion. But it may be a bit difficult to make this ancient wisdom a part of our lives.

Given below are the remarkable factors that we can glean from the story:

* When we are ready to give what others need, they will consider it more valuable than while we are trying to ‘trade’ it (as basically we are always hopeful of getting something out of that transaction), as then they only consider the price we ask for and tend to pay less.

* When there is no lasting attachment to the things we own, we will see that we have wider chances since we are able to free ourselves from what we have.

* When what life offers is not a bed of roses, instead of concentrating on the difficulty if we kept our attention on giving and sharing, life is sure to bring in good things later.

* When we try to encash what we have created, believing that “this is the maximum it will bring”, as we think we might be the loser if it is not turned into cash, our life will stagnate. Instead of that, we should continue to give liberally whatever we have got and however wealthy we are or we are not.

Gifting is an inherent part of the lives of most winners. When we are ready to give first, we have better chances of living a life of perfection, ease and growth.

My Encounter with Del Potro

October 5th, 2009

August twelfth, 2009 was a beautiful, sunny Wednesday morning in Canada. Since I was working at the Rogers Cup, I had access to the grounds and had specially asked for the day off so I could go see all the professionals’ practices. It was really a rich schedule with the finest 10 competing all the way through the day.

At 11 that morning, a friend and I headed over to Court four where the world’s top ranked player, Roger Federer, was set to arrive at within a half hour. Already filled with about a few hundred people, there was barely any room to move.

As the time approached, the court was filled with people who anxiously waited to get a glimpse of the best to ever play the game. With the sun soaring at 95 degrees fahrenheit, we watched him warm up and start hitting balls. To be honest, it was somewhat ordinary and was supposed to go on for two hours.

So, slowly, we move outside the crowd and arrive at an open space. I look up at Court four on the other side to see a tall, lanky competitor dressed in a pink Nike T-shirt and white shorts hitting a few balls. I look closer and in fact realized it was Juan Martin Del Potro.

As he arrived at the exit gate, there had been six fans waiting for him to earn his signature and he did give them out. As he wrote on my picture and proceeded to my pal, I told him “I wish you good luck in your match later.”

Del Potro turned around and had a large grin on his face and claimed “Thank you so much for your support.” He seemed to be extremely pleased with what I had said to him.

As he won yesterday, the irony of this situation just entered my thoughts. The fact that basically not a soul was in attendance to root for him and Rog had a ton of people. Sometimes, it’s better to be let alone than to be relentlessly followed.

Del Potro played a wonderful match this week and is totally worthy of his title. Great job!

The Straw Giving Farmer – Becoming Rich

September 9th, 2009

A millionaire created through giving!

Given below is a mythological story from Japan about the beauty of giving to others and it tells us how we can receive the most perfect gifts when we’re giving and grateful of what we own.

Here is the story.

Once upon a time, there lived a young farmer of very modest means. Whatever he tried to do did not find fruition and he always remained penniless. He was completely broke without any money, without any food and with no relatives. So one night, totally despondent, he went to a temple and sat near the altar begging the Gods to show him a way.

“I have always been truthful and assiduous, but all my industry never resulted in anything good for me. What did I do wrong?”

He fell asleep besides the altar just after having asking his question. In the morning, as he was waking up, he saw one of the Gods in his dream surrounded by a blinding golden light. The God’s voice echoed through his mind.

“When you wake up in the morning, cherish what you have in your hand and go on giving it to others liberally as you proceed,” the God commanded.

The farmer was brimming with questions when he woke up but he tried to shake off his sleep and clear his mind of the strange but clear dream he had. However, he saw a bit of a straw in his hand. It must have remained on his clothes while he worked in his fields.

He was about to throw the straw away, but remembered what God had told him. Once again he sat down. Then he looked curiously at the bit of straw.

The farmer was as thirsty as the trader as he had been walking for long on that hot day. Nevertheless, he offered the tangerines to the trader, who then ate all the three tangerines and felt recharged. He felt very happy about the help rendered to him and opened the wooden box that was by his side. Inside the box were rolls of silk that was dyed with hand. The merchant gifted the farmer one roll and proceeded on his way.

The farmer proceeded again through the same route. He finally found a rivulet from which he drank water and felt restored. He felt more energetic and comfortable and went on.

He walked for some more time but did not come across anyone else. He felt that the silk might be that which would bring him something good. So he chose to go to a town in the vicinity and trade the fabric.

And just when he turned the corner, he saw a group of warriors. One of the warriors who seemed to be the leader was standing by a horse lying on the ground. The farmer heard the voice of the warrior talking to his followers.

Now the farmer stood there with a dying horse. He thought he might have made a mistake that after all he was not meant to be wealthy. Then he remembered something. There was the stream he’d just passed.

Once the horse was up the farmer was able to lead it to the river. The animal drank to its satisfaction and there was also green grass nearby that it could feed on. With both that the horse became fully recharged.

Now the farmer had a horse! They set off again together, this time the man had to run to keep up. The horse was actually leading the way. They ran together for miles. As the sun starting to go down, the horse finally stopped in front of a large house. As the farmer caught up, the horse pushed him with his nose to the entrance of the house.

As the farmer approached the gate, the doors swung open and to his surprise, an old man appeared. The old man was rushing outside and was looking a little pale. He noticed the farmer and the horse standing by the gate.

The man queried the farmer what he wanted. The farmer replied that he was in need of a place to retire for the night. The old man in his turn said that he had to go to the town on an important matter and requested the farmer to be in charge of the house till such time that he returned. He said that his returning might get delayed.

The old man looked as if he was in a hurry, so the farmer told him he can take his horse. The old man was very grateful about it and immediately left with the horse. As he left, he said something totally unexpected to the farmer.

“If I do not come back in three years’ time, this house belongs to you.”

As you perhaps inferred, the old man did not return.

So the farmer lived happily ever after in the old man’s big house with kind-hearted neighbours around and a land rich in good crops. He always kept in mind the rule that he should give to others what he had.

Thank you for reading this story. And what do you think it is all about?

Maybe there is a key to something. When we can turn our ‘getting game’ into a ‘giving game’, our life often flows bringing more abundance. But it is not always easy to practice the old wisdom in our real life.

The following are the interesting principles we can see in the tale:

* When we give the things that others want, they usually value it more than we value it while when we are trying to ’sell’ something (because fundamentally, we want to get something from the deal), they compare the value with our asking price and try to pay less.

* When we are not possessive of whatever we have, we will perceive that we thereby have more chances as we can release the existing possessions.

* When life seems to deal us a bad hand, instead of focusing on the problem if instead we focused on giving and caring, life seems to end up bringing better luck later.

* When we try to encash what we have created, believing that “this is the maximum it will bring”, as we think we might be the loser if it is not turned into cash, our life will stagnate. Instead of that, we should continue to give liberally whatever we have got and however wealthy we are or we are not.

Giving is part of many successful people’s lives. When we give first, we have more chance of living a life of magnificence, ease and expansion.
