Laptop accessories:

February 27th, 2010

Laptop accessories can be a real pain in the neck to figure out. There are so many things out there that people can buy that are just plain useless. However, there is a lot more that is not only super cool, but functional. We’re going to look at some laptop accessories that will make you life, and laptop much easier to deal with.

The four biggest problems people often try to take care of with laptop accessories are tiny keyboards, that sorry mouse pad, heat buildup and moving their laptop from point A to point B. We will look at how to fix all four of those problems for you.

As mentioned before, keyboarding can be a pain in the neck on some laptops, particularly the smaller models. A fold out USB keyboard could definitely come in handy. It just so happens that someone invented one! These babies are plug and play which means the device drivers have to load just one time and forever after you can just plug it in and type away.

A wireless mini-mouse is always useful and way more accurate for most people than the average laptop touch pad. These little wonders are also plug and play. This is awesome because you just plug in the little USB receiver and off you go. No mousepad? No worries! Simply use your laptop case or even gain a few pounds and use your stomach. Most of the ladies will no doubt opt for the case though.

Keeping your laptop cool will keep you happy and your data safe. One option that is of particular use is a laptop tray. Sometimes these will come with a fan built into the bottom and help keep the air flowing over your innards. This is one of the major concerns with keeping your laptop functional; air flow.

Adding a can of compressed air to your laptop accessory kit is a good idea so you can blow out your keyboard and fan duct. While not exactly an accessory, having your laptop serviced and cleaned regularly will add to the life of your machine and help out considerably.

Transporting your laptop is a major ordeal. A hard laptop case is preferred to protect your screen and your laptop’s guts. Unfortunately, it screams out that you own a laptop. Some people do not like that. There are backpack laptop cases that work well. At the very least though, make sure that they have some padding on the inside. As weird as it sounds, it’s easy to forget there is a laptop in there, so making sure you have as much protection as possible is a good idea.

Remember when shopping for your laptop accessories to stick with what you will use often. We all have our different needs, so some online comparative shopping on the various accessories will help you find what you need and do a little price comparison. Keep your laptop safe and humming right along and it will always be nice back. In some ways, it’s like a faithful puppy, only without the taking it for a walk thing.

The Advantages of the Newest Small Laptops

February 19th, 2010

Being connected by a cell phone works fine for some but there are many different things that only a computer can handle. Standard laptops can be bulky, sometimes requiring a myriad of accessories for use and not always convenient to pop open and use. Small laptops are now available that perform all the necessary functions of a standard one by keeping you connected to the web, email and chat in a smaller, more convenient size.

These small laptops or “netbooks” as they are sometimes called can take the place of a much larger desktop or even a standard laptop for day to day use. Their smaller size allows them to be used almost anywhere which can be quite convenient while travelling on a bus or plane. There is no need to have a special case for them or a large amount of accessories to operate them.

Each of these small laptops comes already equipped with a built in wireless connection and the ability to be used almost anywhere. They fit in a purse or backpack with much more ease than a regular laptop and add little extra weight. This can be very advantageous to the student or busy mom who needs to carry books and other items and truly cannot afford to add anything larger to their already overweight bag.

Most of these small laptops come with a standard operating system already loaded and it is usually comparable to what is on your home computer to allow for uploading and downloading of files with ease. The hard drives in the netbooks can range in size but the average is around 2 gigabytes. This coupled with plenty of memory lets this little laptop handle most applications with ease.

The small laptops have the distinct advantage over cell phones in that the built in camera gives the user the ability to video chat instead of simply using text or voice. With so many options with which to stay connected, odds are, these may very well replace cell phones for quite a few people. The runtime for the battery far exceeds that of any cell phone, making the need to be near a power source much less urgent for longer periods.

The battery life and runtime is one area that will need to be kept in mind while browsing for these. Each manufacturer uses different styles of batteries which lead to different runtimes for each. Take the time to compare the manufacturer’s specifications on runtime and stand by time before making a selection as this may greatly affect which model is chosen.

The easiest way to compare many of these laptops is by doing a brief Internet search. This will bring all of the manufacturers and suppliers directly to you and the actual specifications for all of the different models will be listed on each of their websites. Be sure to check that the battery life is what you will need for your expected use along with the proper wireless set up that you will need for your area.

iPad – Oversized iPod Touch Or Kindle Killer?

February 4th, 2010

The long awaited Apple tablet computer has been revealed to the public at last. It’s called the “iPad” and has had a fairly mixed reception so far. That’s no big surprise – Apple always seem to generate polarisation, and there’s plenty of that in evidence right now.

It seems to be the opinion of a fair number of reviewers that the iPad is no more than an outsize iPod Touch. An approximately equal number are very much more in favor of the device and are forecasting that it will sound the death knell for notebooks, netbooks and, of course, the Amazon Kindle reader. The true test will come in March, when the iPad starts shipping. On the face of it, it looks like another huge success for Apple seems the most probable outcome.

Drawing comparisons between the iPad and the Kindle seems to be pretty much par for the course right now. The devices are very different, so comparing them doesn’t make a lot of sense on the face of it. On the other hand, the Kindle has been the absolute “must have” gadget for months now – and has often been suggested to be the “iPod of books” – so perhaps the comparison makes more sense than it appears to. Perhaps we shall find that the iPod of books is actually the iPad before much longer?

The Kindle is a specialist. It concentrates on performing its main role – letting people read e-books – and it does this very well. It possesses a few additional functions – a basic browser and a dictionary for example – and these are somewhat less effective. The iPad is a very versatile device which has the capability to perform a wide range of different tasks. Its color screen, which incorporates touch screen controls and an accelerometer, means that it is a great browser, is able to playback video, can be used as an e-book reader and can run any of the numerous “apps” already developed for the iPod Touch. If you want, you can even play music on it.

So – should Amazon be concerned about the iPad? Is it going to kill the Kindle? Actually, it seems unlikely. In spite of all the hype there is not only a difference in the price of the devices but a different pricing model is being used for each one. The entry level iPad may have a selling price which, at $ 499, is just $ 10 higher than the Kindle DX, but it doesn’t include 3G – that costs more. There is also a monthly connection charge – $ 15 per month, which could rise to $ 30 depending on how much stuff you download on a monthly basis. The Kindle has 3G included and there’s no ongoing monthly fee. Of course, it’s quite likely that the launch of the iPad may “encourage” Amazon to drop the DX ticket price – just as they did with the Kindle 2.0 last year. However, that was always on the cards. It was more a question of when rather than if.

Of course, one of the popular apps that will be used on the iPad will be the “Kindle app” – which allows users to use their iPod or iPad to read Kindle books. It could well be a good opportunity for Amazon to grow the size of the Kindle book market that they can access. Users of the iPad will also have access to an Apple book market – which could prompt some price competition in future. That will all be to the good as far as the end users are concerned.

Don’t forget, when the iPad launches in March, a lot of the potential buyers will be visiting Amazon to claim their new toy. It will probably generate a nice sales spike that month.

Amazon have the possibility of growing the Kindle book market quite significantly. It will also sell the iPad as a merchant, and probably do very well. The Kindle DX ticket price will probably be reduced somewhat – which would have happened at some point in time anyway – but will continue to sell well. It just emphasises how robust the Amazon way of doing business is.

Find out more about the Amazon Kindle and cast your eye over the wide range of Kindle accessories available to help you personalise, protect and enhance your reader.

The Notebooks Revolution- Be Part Of It!

January 27th, 2010

When philanthropist Nicolas Negroponte from a company called MIT Media Labs envisaged the ‘One laptop per child’ initiative, he enrolled leading LCD screen designer, Mary Lou Jepson to lead the project. The initiative would provide notebooks that are distributed to children from developing nations to further their education.

Jepson was assigned the task of designing a robust little laptop computer with the best of the basics: a full keyboard, Wi-Fi connectivity, a colour display screen and battery power that would sustain it when regular electricity supply is not available, as is the case in many developing countries. Only 50% of the children in the world have regular access to electricity. Priced at approximately $100, these little notebooks would be sold to governments in bulk and handed out freely to children in rural areas and villages.

Being pioneering, Jepson used flash memory which uses significantly less energy than a rotational hard disk and won’t break too easily. The Geode motherboard was created by AMD and though it is not fast, it does not require a lot of power. She made use of open source software which is cheaper than the mainstream software on the market.

The best part is the LCD screen panel that is able to tell if an image is static and then turns off the main processor in order to save on electricity.

A Taiwanese firm built the laptop. Although the company is not well known, they are the largest manufacturer of laptops in the world. The co employs the worlds’ leading computer engineers and many of the parts on the computer that you are sitting by right now, have probably been designed by the co for the leading brands.

A rival co was next in line to create a book. The rival’s books’ DVD drive can’t run resource hungry programs, as it was mainly intended as a back-up companion device. The device was intended for checking emails and surfing social networks. Their target market of older people and children in mind, they set out to develop their book. With flash memory and a 7 inch LCD screen, the book features Linux and other open source software.

When the rival sold out their whole inventory of 350 000 books in only a couple of months. Since then, most other computer manufacturers developed notebooks to add to their range. Books retail at around $400.

Notebooks, also known as ultra portables, mini laptops or mini notebooks offer less of the hi-tech hardware features, as they are designed mainly to be a low-cost companion device.
