Conceal The Electrical Cords Lying On The Floor

March 9th, 2010

The improperly concealed electrical cords and wires are a common sight in most of the households. The homeowners avoid concealing the electrical cords as they consider the option wastage of time. They avoid such arrangements when things are functioning smoothly. However, such setting may prove costly for the structural integrity of the electrical setup in the long run. The chaotic placement of electrical cords and wires increases the chances of an electric hazard to a large extent.

Such a scenario may invite a possible tragedy to your home spaces. The pets and children are most likely to become the casualty of such a chaotic wiring arrangement. Hence, proper modifications must be made to prevent such accidents.

The one time job of concealing the electrical cords lying on the floor can save you from the possible electrical accidents. The good thing about the task is that it doesn’t require you to be an expert of the trade. Some logic coupled with right tools can save the day for you.

Observe the wall area that lies next to the concerned electrical outlet. If you have a baseboard on place then the things get straightforward and simple. Otherwise, you have to make arrangement for an additional setup. Instead of covering the distance diagonally, move along a straight line. Such a scheme appears sober and complements the calmness of the home interiors. Take out some additional length of electrical cord from your electrical tool kit. The additional length would ensure that the cord covers the required distance with ease.

Use a pry bar tool to pry up the baseboard carefully. Slip the length of the cord behind the baseboard area and make sure that the entire length of electrical cord is concealed. Replace the baseboard and move on to the next step.

Alternatively, you can attach the concerned length of wire along the edge of the baseboard. Such a temporary setting saves you from the task of prying up the board.

Bend down to attach the wire leading from the floor to the wall. Use staple pins or nails to serve the required purpose.

Place an attractive carpet on the baseboard area to enhance the appeal of the room.

How To Select The Outdoor Electric Utility Light ?

March 7th, 2010

If you feel the necessity of having outdoor utility lights for your house then you must analyze a few factors before heading to any lighting store. You should make proper assessment of your requirements. Without proper study, you may end up getting the wrong products leading to the wastage of time and money.

First thing to consider is whether you live in a well-lit area on a busy lane or in a remote area with no street lights. If you are residing in a well-lit location then your lighting requirements will not be much as compared to those people who are living in distant places with no proper lighting facilities.

Generally outdoor lighting is of two types, aesthetic lighting and safety lighting. Aesthetic lighting is meant to enhance the beauty of the outer parts of your home. It should be soft and subtle if you are living in a well-lit area.

Safety lighting is a necessary requirement for some places in your house like pool or staircase or any other spot like this. Safety lights are generally mounted on the roof of the home. You should mount lights at each and every corner of the house. The entrance of the home should also be occupied by such lighting fixtures.

If you have a backyard in your home then make sure that it also has enough lighting. To avoid minor accidents during night, it is important to mount lighting fixtures in these areas. If you have small children at home then it becomes even more compulsory.

If your house is located in a remote location with no proper lighting then you need to light up every nook of your house. It would help you to restrict the entry of any intruder or foreign elements. Also, it will provide the required safety to your family members during night time.

Keep in mind that mounting light on the house itself is not sufficient. You also need to place lights in some particular spots like sidewalks, lamp posts or poolside. If you spend time in pool during nights then it becomes more significant. Proper and efficient lighting provides both safety and decor to the exteriors of the home.

Visit the local home improvement store or the electrical store to explore the available varieties of outdoor utility lighting fixtures. Ask the concerned salesperson for his valuable suggestions on that front. In addition, the guidance of a local electrician can be availed.

Handling The Job Of A Live Electrical Wire

March 6th, 2010

Most homeowners and electricians work on the electrical segments in an electricity-deprived state. The idea of working with the live electrical wires appears foolish and unsafe to the homeowners and electricians alike. However, you could find yourself in certain unforced circumstances that may force you to work on an active electrical wire. Besides the electrical emergencies, it is always advised to reject the job of a live electrical wire or socket.

In the rarest cases, you may have to work on an active electrical wire. The gravity of the situation doesn’t permit you enough time to locate the electrical breaker box or the electric fuse. The loss of time could prove decisive in an electrical emergency. Some homeowners even fail to locate the breaker box or electric fuse. Such an ignorant attitude leads to heavy loss during an electrical emergency.

For example, there could be a case that one of the family members would have come in contact with an electrical wire that doesn’t have any immediate shutoff switch. There are two possible ways of escaping out the victim. First, you can walk down to the electrical breaker box of your home and switch off the concerned breaker switch. This procedure may take some time to complete which could prove crucial for the life of the victim.

Second, you can cut the electrical wire that is making contact with the victim’s body. The second option seems acceptable as it would release the victim instantaneously.

There are certain tips that need to be followed in order to accomplish the task with safety.

The common mistake made by a majority of the homeowners is that they try to pull the victim out forcefully. Such an action brings you into the faulty electric circuit. Furthermore, do not throw water or any other liquid on the person.

Make sure that you are wearing rubber slippers or shoes. If you are not wearing shoes or slipper then don’t waste time looking for one. Locate a wooden block or stick and try to dissociate the wire from the victim’s body. Focus the strike on the wire rather than the body of the person.

Carefully take away the person from the site and cut the faulty wire with wiring cutters. Render required medical aid to the victim.

Testing An Electric Capacitor

March 6th, 2010

Capacitor is an important component for many of the electrical equipments. It stores energy in it to provide power to your electrical appliances. They are the mini powerhouses for your appliances and give them a start. But like the other mortal things in this world, they also lose there value as the time passes. You can check the effectiveness of the capacitor with the help of an ohm meter. The ohm meter tells you about the state of capacitor and determines whether it is in working condition or not.

The discharging can be done with the help of a screw driver with an insulated end. Before moving ahead with the proceedings, cut the electricity supply. To discharge, grab the screw driver from the insulated end and touch both the leads of capacitor to the metal end of the screw driver. The capacitor discharges with a sound and an electric spark.

Now, make way for the ohm meter. Plug the red lead into the connector indicating ‘ohm’ and the black lead into the connector indicating ‘com’. Next, switch on the instrument. In some cases, you have to manually switch the meter to ohm position.

Touch the metal ends of the instrument to each other. On touching the probes to each other, the needle on the scale steers towards the extreme right (zero ohms). Now, separate the leads and the needle would come back to the far left side which is infinite position or a wide open circuit.

Touch the red lead to one of the terminals of the capacitor and the black one to the other terminal. The needle deflects gradually toward right (zero ohms) and then gradually comes back to infinity. This movement signifies that the capacitor is in good condition. Moreover, the capacitor is properly charging and discharging.

Next, reverse the combination of the connection between the capacitor leads and ohm meter leads. The behavior of needle on the face of meter remains same as in the previous case. If the meter suddenly drops to zero and never comes back to infinite position then the capacitor is shorted one.

In case the meter does not fluctuate at all then an internal break is detected in the regular scheme of things.

Always perform testing carefully as the charged capacitor can prove hazardous.

Under-Cabinet Lights Buying Guide

March 3rd, 2010

Under cabinet lights are the lights that are fixed under cabinets of kitchen to light up small dark cabinets and make them convenient to use. With the help of these lights your kitchen becomes lively and more useful.

Bar lights are considered to be very effective as under cabinet lights. In bar light, different light bulbs are installed at certain distance from each other in a rectangular bar. Further this bar is covered with a glass covering to spread mixed and constant light all around. You can also use a wall outlet for operating these lights. Based on the light bulb used in these lights, bar lights are available in three different types.

Fluorescent lights can also be used as under cabinet lights and are very cost effective. You can get these lights in various styles and sizes to meet your need. These lights are very advantageous to use and have also got energy star rating. One big disadvantage of using this light is that sometimes they produce flickering light which could badly harm your eyes.

Halogen lights are popular for producing bright and intense light and due to this reason they are very suitable for under cabinet lighting. The light produced by halogen light is very much similar to sunlight and due to this reason they do not affect your eyes. But one of the biggest drawbacks of using halogen light is that they get very hot and could also burn your finger or hand if you touch the bulb by mistake.

Xenon lights are more costly than fluorescent or halogen lights but have many advantages over fluorescent or halogen lights. The life of xenon light is five times more than halogen lights and xenon lights also provide natural and cool light. They also don’t generate flickering light like fluorescent lights generate. The energy consumption of xenon light is also less than standard light bulbs.

Puck lights are available in small sizes and generally come in round shape. These lights have ability to produce accent lights. A single puck light is about one and half inch tall and seven to eight inches around. You can use either a single puck light in your cabinet or may use combination of puck lights in the cabinet.

Halogen puck lights use halogen bulbs. Some halogen puck lights are designed to be plugged into a wall outlet and have a transformer included to change the standard household 120 volts to 12 volts. Halogen lights are very bright and get hot. Make sure that they are spaced widely apart.

Xenon puck lights are very advantageous to use. These lights have small size and can be easily fixed inside a cabinet. Xenon lights are not very hot to touch like halogen lights so you can easily use them.

Common Bulb Types

March 3rd, 2010

Incandescent bulbs, Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs, Fluorescent bulbs and Halogen bulbs are some of the bulb types that are available in market. In below mentioned paragraphs, you will get brief description about all these.

Incandescent bulbs are regular or standard bulbs which are still most common. They are available in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes. These bulbs are suitable for most uses and fixtures. However, they have low initial cost but they have higher associated energy costs over their lifetime. These bulbs create light by heating a filament inside the bulb. Since much of the energy used to heat the filament is wasted, they are less energy-efficient.

Compact fluorescent bulbs are becoming more and more famous day by day due to its energy saving capacity and long lasting nature. These bulbs come in different varieties of shapes, colors and patterns. You can choose any of them, according to your choice and need. These bulbs don’t require any special kind of socket for its functioning.

Now we will discuss that how a compact fluorescent bulb works. Inside these bulbs, a mercury gas filled tube or ballast is present. With the flow of little current from ballast to this gas, UV light is generated and when this light hits the white coating of the bulb the bulb glows to provide you light. In this process, very little heat or say electricity is required, which makes them energy efficient.

Standard fluorescent bulbs are very similar to compact fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs also help in saving electricity and are very durable but these bulbs can not be fixed in standard sockets. One more disadvantage of using fluorescent bulbs is that you can not get many choices in it. These bulbs are available in linear, circular and U-shape.

Fluorescent bulbs generate light using the same technique as compact fluorescent bulbs do. However, fluorescent bulbs need separate ballast (component that provides and regulates electricity to the bulb).

Halogen bulbs could be found in market in different shapes and sizes such as A-line and reflector style. The light generated by them is also clear and bright. These lights have high initial cost but are long lasting.

Halogen bulbs provide light using the same technique as incandescent bulbs. However, in a halogen bulb, the halogen gas inside the bulb deposits the tungsten back onto the filament as it evaporates, allowing the bulb to last longer.

Steps To Build A Hand Operated Electric Generator

March 2nd, 2010

Some of the electrical projects allow you to learn a lot. The construction of an electric generator is one such project that informs you about the basics of electrical working. A small-sized electric generator is too regular to build. Moreover, the small voltage limit renders a safe course of action to the project.

An electric generator is a mechanical device or apparatus that generates electricity owing to the energy of a fuel. It offers a number of advantages to the homeowners. The primary objective of an electric generator is to provide electricity to all the spaces of the home when the actual power supply is absent. The procedure of building a small-sized electric generator asks you to follow a sequence of steps.

Start off the campaign by arranging a DC motor. You can take some valuable suggestions from an expert regarding the same. Make sure that you select high voltage and amperage limit for your DC motor. Such a setting would widen the range of electrical devices that could avail the services of your electric generator. A DC motor with 6 volts and 1 ampere current is appropriate to start with.

Once you have completed the first phase of the project, move to the construction of the hand crank. The crank complements the axle of the DC motor and renders a comfortable handling to the user. A long plastic or wooden component would serve the required purpose.

You can make a choice between a generator without gears and a generator with gears. If you are a novice then the generator without gears is suitable for you. The presence of gears leads to more turns of cranks and hence, better electrical output.

Take out a length of wire from the electrical tool box. Identify the positive and negative terminals of the DC motor. Attach the wires coming from a battery unit to the corresponding terminals of the DC motor.

Test the basic operation of your newly constructed electric generator by turning the crank. The battery unit must have a voltage that falls within the prescribed range.

It is always advisable to work on smaller voltages at the experimental level. However, you can increase the voltage level of the generator once you know the basic know-how of an electric generator.

How To Splice Electrical Wire ?

March 1st, 2010

The task of splicing electrical wires is almost regular in a majority of electrical jobs. It is very important to splice the wires properly as an improper juncture could lead to shorts or irregularities. The splicing of electrical wires is one task that is quite regular in most electrical repair works.

Few tips that could help you with the proper splicing of the electrical wires are mentioned here. Before moving ahead with the proceedings, apprehend the actual meaning of splicing the wires. The splicing of wire takes into account proper twisting and twirling of the concerned wires. Improper splicing job would fail to deliver the required services to the electrical setup. Moreover, the electrical irregularities such as shorts and shocks would occur owing to faulty wire splicing.

It is always advisable to carry the first aid box with you. The electrical jobs are risky and the dangers are foreseen. Hence, it is mandatory to stick to the safety precautions while handling the electrical wiring.

Locate the two wires that need to be merged. Take them out carefully from the panel or the socket. It is always advisable to switch off the main breaker box before you move ahead with the proceedings. You can confirm the same by testing the concerned circuit or socket with the help of a voltage tester. Make sure that the length of wires fetched from the panel is straight and kink free.

Avail the services of your wire strippers to strip off some insulation from the ends of both the participating wires. Do not force the issue on the wires as that could damage the internal composition of the cord as well. Use appropriate-sized cutter to render a cut on the wire tip. Pull off some insulation from the wire with the help of the stripper tool.

Keep both the connecting ends of the wires together. Use a pair of pliers to hold the ends together. Now, start twirling the ends of the wires together such that they attach strongly to each other. Keep the number of twirls to a maximum of 3-4 twirls.

Render finishing touch to the whole setting with the help of wire connectors. Install the connector onto the ends of the wires and start turning them. If the wire connectors present any resistance to the turning operation then replace the connectors with the smaller ones. Turn the setting until the connectors occupy the wires entirely.

In case of a complication, call a local electrician and let him handle the situation.
