Role Playing in the Harry Potter World

April 9th, 2010

When you choose to take a piece of literature and expand upon it, either through roleplaying, or through some form of fan fiction, there are a number of choices that you have to make. First and foremost is, will you stick to the logical and chronological timeline that was laid out in the book? If you choose to follow the chronology of the book you can either choose to replay something that was written, simply mirroring what is in the story, or you can fill in gaps that the story doesn’t cover, such as time periods which were glossed over, or events which were not described in great detail.

On the other hand you can always choose to create a completely new derivative. You can make Harry Potter turn evil, or can have Hermione get a crush on Snape, or any of an infinite number of changes that you can make, to explore the “what ifs” of the story.

Another choice you have to make is time. A series such as Harry Potter stretches out over 8 years, and you can set your own derivative adventures during any of those years, or even before or after the events in the book.

Finally, you have to make choices about characters. You have the whole universe of Harry Potter characters open to you, but you have to understand their relationships, their connections, and how they react and interact with one another. This will all also be determined to some extent by the time period that your story is taking place in.

One of the things that can make a decent Harry Potter roleplaying session so difficult is that the book series is quite long and detailed, with literally hundreds of characters popping up at various points throughout. On the one hand this gives you a lot of room for creativity. On the other hand it also gives you a lot of room to make mistakes, and to forget important details.

This article was written by Jim Slate on behalf of http://www.RolePages.com – a fictional social network where you can sign up and engage in roleplaying as Harry Potter, Dumbledore, Hermione, Ron, or even as your own new character such as a vampire, a demon, a centaur, or a dragon.

Two Great Harry Potter Games

March 12th, 2010

Widely known and a worldwide sensation, that is how you could describe Harry Potter. To milk the success of the franchise a couple of games have been produced. We will review two of them.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Finally a Harry Potter game that has some good graphics, but is the game play equally nice? As anyone knows, the game is based on a movie that is based on a book.

The cut scenes look real good and the characters look like their real counter parts, the voice acting on the other hand is pretty horrible.

To add depth to the game the developers added sixteen potions that you need to learn in order to complete the game. There are also spells that you need to master.

As you can imagine, the story in this game is kept to a minimum. If you want to know the more about the story, get the book or watch the movie.

This game has come out on many different consoles, even on the handhelds. If you have a Wii, I would suggest getting that version.

There are over 100 crests available that you can collect, but it is not necessary to collect any of them. This adds replay value to the game.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

If you like to explore, solve puzzles, and like to battle, then this game will be a fun game to pass the time. There are about eight magic spells you need to learn in order to progress through the game.

One thing that is a bit disappointing is that the graphics are not that great, the cut scenes are terrible and the voice acting is equally badly done.

Nobody plays these games for the story. If you want to know about the story, then you should watch the movie.

The controls are similar to that of the Zelda games. This is a big improvement, because the Zelda games have great control, so the developers did a good job of taking a page from one of the more interesting games that have come out.

These two games are the best Harry Potter games to date. Many more will be developed and we will review those in the future.

Mediocre Harry Potter Games

February 6th, 2010

Everybody knows that Harry Potter has been written by J. K. Rowling and that the books have been made into movies. After the movies came out and took the world by storm other things followed.

To keep the fans happy and thinking about Harry Potter, games have been created. So now you can either read the book, watch the movie. or play the video game.

Lets take a brief look at these Harry Potter games.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

If you love exploring and solving puzzles, then you are going to enjoy this game. There are also spells that you need to learn in order to finish the game. If you have watched the movie then you already know what to expect from the story.

The graphics of the game are pretty bland but good enough. The music is entertaining and draws you into the game.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

The entire game takes place at Hogwarts. It is a linear game and cutscenes are in black and white. You can run, jump and use your magic stick to perform spells.

The game contains classroom sessions where you have to complete the task to learn a new spell. These spells are very handy and mandatory to get the job done.

The graphics of the game get the job done, but the cut scenes are not that great.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

After a couple of games you would think that the developers would have a pretty good grasp on what works and what the fans do not like about the other Harry Potter games. Unfortunately for us they did not do that great of a job with this one.

One thing the game developers could have done is tightening up the controls. Nothing is worse then playing a long game with horrible game play and controls. The most horrible function is the lock on mode.

What is good about the game play is the spells that you obtain and use throughout the game. It is very fun when you get a new spell and see the various ways in how you are able to use it.

Looking at the most played Harry Potter games, you will start to wonder how much more fun they could have been if the developers spent more time on them.

Summary Of Harry Potter Legos

December 19th, 2009

There are Harry Potter Legos kits that represent important elements of almost every movie that has been released. For an individual who is especially fond one of the Harry Potter movies. Or, someone who enjoys Legos and all of the Harry Potter movies these kits provide an excellent opportunity to indulge both.

The simplest, and most easy to construct Harry Potter kit is the Flying Lesson. This kit is one that can be constructed by a child or novice in a short time. Some of the kits are extremely detailed and construction will take many hours. The more complex kits have moving parts, secret passages, etc.

Hogwart’s Castle played a large role in each of the Harry Potter movies. In one of the movies it’s character was different and secret rooms and chambers were found through passages. Therefore, the Harry Potter Legos kits include two Hogwart’s Castles that are the same on the outside, but very different on the inside.

If a child is putting together some of the kits, they will need the help of an adult to finish. The parts, pieces, and elements of some of the more complex construction projects are very small and will require an individual with some experience and dexterity to complete.

Some of the kits which are easy to construct have added elements that make the finished project look like it was very difficult to complete. The Diagon Alley Shop kit has a beautiful backdrop that is attached to the piece when completed. It looks like it is part of the finished piece and makes the overall project look much more difficult to build than it actually was.

The kits are each different, unique, and distinct. There are over thirty of these kids categorized by the movie that is reflected in the kit. The Prisoner of Azkaban has 11 kits, The Chamber of Secrets has 9 kits, and The Sorcerer’s Stone has 8 kits. Each kit is a representation of a major set on the movie it is representing.

The difficulty level for the kits is evenly distributed through each series. A novice will find easy kits in each of the three categories. An enthusiast will find very difficult and complex construction in each series as well. The complexity may include secret passages, moving elements, etc.

When selecting a kit of Harry Potter Legos as a gift one will want to consider the age and skill level of the recipient. Some of the kits are very expensive and will become collector pieces. Other kits are extremely affordable and provide a novice with a way to learn how to use Legos in constructing interesting objects.

2010 will bring a new TT Harry Potter Legos game. This game will be an improvement on the previous game and will have better Lego graphics and animation. The enhancements to the handheld Harry Potter game are anticipated to provide Legos enthusiasts with hours of fun. The game is expected to increase interest in Legos and provide entertainment for individuals who may have never constructed with Legos before.

Many websites have Harry Potter Legos available. These sites offer many other types of Harry Potter memorabilia as well. One can find forums with information on building and tips and techniques that will be useful when working on the more difficult construction projects.
