E-book readers are very popular these days. A lot of the credit for that must go to the Amazon Kindle of course – but there are plenty of other e-book readers to choose from today. It should be remembered that the e-book reader market -at least as a commercial enterprise – is still very new. This sector is expanding very quickly indeed, but it is still under development. For example, there is no agreement in the industry as to what format e-books should be stored in. Many of the new e-book readers seem to be going for the ePub format. Amazon has its own proprietary format for the Kindle books used on its Kindle reader – and it has received some criticism for this in the past.

The theory is that having an industry standard would allow e-books to be transferred from one e-book reader to another and allow end users more freedom when it comes to sourcing e-books. Greater choice and more purchasing options should be good for the consumers and lead to lower prices, It’s easy enough to see the logic. It makes sense.

Amazon, with their proprietary Kindle format, can justifiably point to their long pedigree of offering their customers excellent value for money in the field of reading – hardback, paperback or e-book. It’s difficult to see the Amazon Kindle reader winding up as the Betamax of e-book readers. However, it may be that the most important discussions at this time will be those taking place between the major publishing houses and the e-book retailers. Only when some agreement on pricing policy is reached will it makes sense to thrash out some agreement on an industry standard e-book format.

It depends on the sophistication of your air conditioner, what its filter can block, but most will filter tiny particles such as pollen and traffic pollution out of the air it is circulating in the room.

These filters need to be cleaned or replaced fairly frequently and you will need to check your air conditioner’s handbook to find out what you can do. Often, it will say that they can be cleaned two or three times with either soapy water and a tooth brush or vacuumed clean. After that they have to be replaced, in order for the unit to be totally effective.

There has been a great deal of speculation regarding the release of the next upgrade of Amazon’s hugely successful Kindle e-book reader. The original Kindle reader was released in November of 2007 and the updated Kindle 2 followed in February of 2009. If a similar gap was to be maintained, then the Kindle 2 which is now a little over a year old, would be due for replacement at some point in the near future.

Since the launch of the Kindle 2, many new readers from various different manufacturers have hit the market and end user choice has increased dramatically. Over and above dedicated e-book readers such as the Nook from Barnes and Noble and Sony’s Daily Edition, the new iPad from Apple is also viewed by many as a potential threat to the Kindle as it has the capability to read e-books. In summary, bearing in mind both its age and the increased level of competition from other new readers, many of which have additional functionality and features, the Kindle 2 looks ready for an upgrade fairly soon.

Which begs the question – what new features might Amazon decide to include in a new updated version? No doubt Amazon will have some surprises up their sleeve – but perhaps the latest business acquisition could provide a clue to at least one new feature that we may expect to find in future Kindle versions.

Amazon has very recently procure a small start-up company by the name of Touchco. Touchco are a company who specialise in touch sensitive displays. The technology is quite different to that used in other touch screen displays currently on the market. It is resistance based rather than the more common capacitive beast technology. It may be used with colour displays and E ink displays. According to the New York Times, it is cheaper than the capacitive type of touch screen display used by such devices as the iPod.

Touchco where a spin off from New York University’s Media Research Lab. They are believed to have no more than half a dozen employees. These will now be absorbed into Amazon’s Kindle laboratory. The technology, although well advanced, were still in a research phase at the time of the Amazon takeover. It was not being actively used in any commercially available product.

The Touchco display technology could be used to allow Kindles with colour screens and touch controls to be manufactured. The possibility of a versatile multitasking Kindle, able to handle a variety of different tasks – much like the Apple iPad for example – would then be very real. Of course, it could be that this will not be the next iteration of the Kindle reader. We may have to wait a little while longer whilst the technology is fully developed. Even so, Amazon’s latest acquisition seems to give a fairly strong indication of how they think the Kindle reader may evolve in future.
