The Working Of A Circuit Breaker

June 11th, 2010

Often, the faulty circuit is responsible for the electrical short-circuits which in turn damages the costly home appliances. A circuit breaker plays a vital role in preventing such a loss. Circuit breaker is a device that shuts off the power supply on account of an error in any of the electrical circuits.

Everybody knows that when current flows through any substance including a wire in our case, it generates heat. The amount of heat produced is directly proportional to the amount of current flowing. Also, flowing current from a wire creates a magnetic field around the conducting medium. Higher the current flow, more is the magnetic field. These are the two basic principles of modern day circuit breakers.

Circuit breaker has a switch-like handle which enables you to interact with the breaker device. The switch can have as many as four positions: ‘On’, ‘Off’, ‘Tripped’ and ‘Reset’. It is not difficult to find the on and off positions but tripped and reset positions are a bit complicated to switch to. To trip the breaker, you need to switch the handle in the middle of the ‘on’ and ‘off’ position. Moreover, it can be marked red as well for easy interface. To reset the breaker, glide down the switch towards ‘off’ position gently and a clicking sound authenticates the resetting of the breaker.

Before you reset and turn on the breaker, follow some safety tips mentioned below. If it is turned off already then it indicates that something has gone wrong inside the home. Hence, do not switch on the breaker before fixing the concerned problem. If you continue without repairing the fault, the breaker can trip again. As a temporary solution, you can plug out the appliance from the main supply.

The internal circuitry of a breaker resembles the circuitry of an ordinary switch in your home. Toggle handle, levers, springs etc. play an important role in the internal working of both the devices. Similar to a regular switch, breaker also consists of a bimetallic switch that determines the increase in heat.

Circuit-breakers are convenient because they have same current ratings as fuses. However, the difference is that one can use breakers over and over again by resetting them.

A circuit breaker provides you the luxury of using your appliances without any headache. Moreover, they protect your appliances even when you are sleeping.

Circuit-breaker not only saves you money but also protects your valuable electrical appliances.

What Are The Electrical Testing Tools ?

June 11th, 2010

Electrical testing equipments allow an electrician to understand the causes of the common electrical problems. They are used to obtain relevant information from the electrical fixtures or appliances that are under test. This information may be in the form of signals or some readings. Some of these testing tools are mentioned below.

An analog multi-meter is considered quite significant in the regular scheme of things. It is used to measure the voltage, current, resistance, frequency and signal power of a circuit. It can measure electrical potential in volts, current in amperes and resistance in ohms. Common problem of short-circuits can be found with the help of an analog multi-meter.

Second testing equipment in the list is a digital multi-meter. It possesses a good wiring diagram and an effective multi-meter is capable of finding the cause of any electrical problem. A digital multi-meter provides you with one of the most crucial features, ‘accuracy’. Accuracy is crucial when you are testing the equipments for voltage, current and resistant. This is one reason why digital meters are preferred over the analog ones.

Data logger is a device that is used to record various data values at different instances of time. It also has a built-in sensor that can test the cause of the electrical problem.

Insulation tester is used to test the consistency of the windings or cables in electric motors, switchgears, transformers and other electrical setups. Next device is a power quality analyzer. This device is used to gauge electrical power signals. It also proves handy in supporting the load’s ability to function appropriately with electrical power. It takes count of the various factors such as AC voltage, AC current and frequency.

An electrical meter test equipment is used to test the exact quantity of energy recorded (which is generally measured in kilowatt-hours or cubic feet). Also, it keeps track of the energy supplied to all the business/residential areas.

Before buying any of these testing tools, study the consistency and effectiveness of each one of these as costliest is not always the best. Choose a brand offers guarantee of replacement if the purchased tool malfunctions under the guarantee period.

The performance and the credibility of an electrician enhances drastically with the assistance of these electrical testing tools or equipments.

Procedure To Repaint Your Old Refrigerator

June 9th, 2010

An old refrigerator unit disturbs the beatification scheme of your home to a large extent. If you do not have enough money in your pocket to buy a new refrigerator then you can opt for a repainting job. You can repaint your refrigerator on your own without hiring any professional. You would need a special paint to complete the paint job with conviction.

First thing to understand is that you are not required to change the backside color of the refrigerator because it is black by default. Black color is used on the backside because it complements the operation of the coils in radiating energy. You only need to paint the top, front and sides of the refrigerator.

Now, you need to choose a color of your choice for the new paint job of your refrigerator. Go to a reputed local home improvement store and explore the varieties of the paint you want. This paint type is special because it can resist heat and cold without peeling off. Also, the paint comes either in a spray bottle or in a regular box allowing the users to choose their own comfort level.

Clear off stains, dirt and smoke from the body of the refrigerator and smoothen the surface of the refrigerator to make it conducive for a paint job.

If there are any scratches, nicks or traits of rust on the external surface of the refrigerator then tackle them first. Use a sand paper to scrub them off such that a smoother surface is attained. Do not hurt the paintwork around the nicks and scratches.

Before commencing the paintjob, put some masking tape on the areas which fall outside the scope of the paintjob. Use special masking tape for concealing such units of the refrigerator. Standard masking tape is much stickier than the specialized mask tap. Also, mask the rubber seals located on the top, bottom and sides of the refrigerator’s body.

Read the manufacturer’s instructions written on the paint-box and start painting your refrigerator. Once the paint dries off, remove the masking tape to release the new look of your refrigerator.

A novice can also repaint the refrigerator by following these simple tips.

Troubleshooting: Common Air-Conditioner Problems

June 8th, 2010

People do not care about the maintenance of their electrical fixtures until they start giving real troubles. When the appliances start creating problems, homeowners leave the issue to a licensed professional without apprehending the intensity of the concerned problem. Homeowners can diagnose the issue to determine its intensity. A particular problem could be an outcome of a number of factors.

One of the common issues with an air-conditioner is the unavailability of cold air. Here, the point to understand is that there may be different reasons responsible for a particular fault. Most often, a clogged filter that is located at the front of the machine prevents the AC from blowing cold air. Due to dirt, the filter gets clogged and the condenser fins are not able to breathe freely.

The dirt from the air filter can also settle over the condenser fins and in that case, the fins are not able to work at their maximum efficiency. There are special brushes available in market for cleaning the filth and dirt from the condensers.

If the working efficiency of your machine decreases dramatically within a month or week then the Freon pressure inside your machine is held responsible. The pressure range for Freon is between 65 and 70 PSI. To check the level of Freon pressure, you need a pressure gauge. If the pressure is low then avoid refilling on your own as Freon can be dangerous when inhaled. Certain agencies offer their services to refill your Freon reservoir at a moderate amount.

In case the thermostat is set to a low level and you are not getting cold air, look for the condenser fan’s motor. Due to burnt-out or loose wires, the fan motor stops its normal routine work.

If you have a split type air-conditioner installed and the outside unit is not working then it may be accredited to a burnt condenser fan. For safety reasons, the outside unit of the air-conditioner should be repaired by a licensed expert only.

If the inside unit is running well with an abnormal outside unit then it is due to an overheated condenser in the outside unit of the machine. Machine stops functioning due to an increased temperature.

To maintain the normal operation of an electrical appliance, regular inspection is mandatory.

Specifications For Replacing A Fluorescent Bulb

June 2nd, 2010

Long ago, you did not have enough choices when it came to the replacement of a fluorescent light bulb. However, modern day market is flooded with a huge variety of fluorescent light bulbs. Such a huge variety makes it difficult for a novice to choose the appropriate replacement fixture. In order to replace a light bulb in correct manner, you have to follow certain guidelines.

Fluorescent lighting fixtures are long tubes that come in various weights. Nowadays, they are also available in U shapes and circular shapes. The U-shaped tubes are commonly used underneath the cabinets with ballast at one end. In case of circular bulbs, they are used in sockets.

Fluorescent bulbs are used for providing bright, white and glaring lights. They are available in vast colors and in different shades of white.

Replace the old fused bulb with exactly the same sized new fluorescent bulb. Also, take care of the wattage limit of the bulb. Never try to replace the old bulb with a bulb which can exploit the maximum wattage. Doing this will support overheating in the ballast and the possibility of fire would increase.

Among the main parts of the fluorescent bulb, a bulb holder, ballast, a switch and a starter are quite significant. While the holder is responsible for holding the bulb in place, switch is responsible for turning on and turning off the bulb. Ballast and starter provide the necessary electric current to the bulb that ionizes the gas inside the bulb to illuminate the bulb.

How can you determine the appropriate time for the replacement of a fluorescent light bulb? Answer to this question is quite difficult as fluorescent bulbs do not show any signs of ‘burn out’ like in incandescent lamps. When one side of the light becomes darker than the other, it may be the time to arrange a replacement.

If you are not aware of the condition of the ballast then try checking the bulb or the tube in the other working ballast or socket.

Before changing the fluorescent light bulb, turn off the main current supply. Now, unscrew the bulb or push the tube to one side and pull it down and out. Similarly, put the replacement tube or bulb inside the socket. Do not try to fit the tube into ballast forcefully as it can spoil the ballast.

Maintaining A Microwave Oven

May 31st, 2010

Would you prefer an expert to repair the common problems of your microwave? If no is your call then you would be required to complete the repairing work on your own. At some stage, most homeowners may encounter some problems related to microwave. Some of them can be fixed by a novice if proper guidance is provided.

One of the most common problems associated with the microwave is of the replacement of the door handle. Though it seems to be pretty easy but it needs soft and gentle hands. The screws holding the handle in place are placed underneath a trim and this trim is held in place by a tab. Now, use a putty knife to take apart the trim from the door of the microwave. Be careful such that the trim and tab remain in tact. When trim is removed, the screws are wide-opened and you can unscrew them to replace the handle easily.

If the food inside the microwave catches fire and the microwave stops working then search the flame thermostat safety switch. This switch is encapsulated in every microwave nowadays. The function of this switch is to stop the working of the microwave in case something inside the microwave catches fire.

When replacing the bulb of the microwave, make sure to turn off the power supply. This step before the replacement of the bulb is very important to keep yourself and the smart board of the microwave safe.

In case the microwave is arcing during its operation, turn off the device to prevent any further damage. The arcing inside the microwave is a result of the food that is sticking in and around the wave guard area. This arcing of microwave can be stopped by keeping the microwave clean and dirt free.

If the microwave display screen is counting down and the inside light is also glowing, but it is not heating then check the door switch of the microwave. You can check the switch using an ohm-meter. Beforehand, discharge the current using a metal screwdriver which has an insulated handle. Now, attach the probes of the ohm-meter to the end of the wire while setting the scale to the lowest scale. If the needle hardly moves in the display of the ohm-meter then your switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Always make sure that the microwave is switched off before you start to work on its wirings.

Follow these simple steps to easily resolve the common problems associated with a microwave oven.

How To Arrange Lights In A Pond ?

May 7th, 2010

Adding a pool in your backyard not only bestows you with the relaxation point but also, provides your home a lovely and awesome landscape. But, all the beauty dematerializes after the sunset.

With some pond lighting, the area will stand out and continue to be a source of pride no matter what the time of day. The article below familiarizes some steps to arrange the lights in the pond.

Before setting in to illuminate a pond we must gather the required items such as floating solar pond lights, floating lighted pond fountain, electric or soar underwater pond lights, a transformer and the electric source.

With all the above things ready, we can easily begin to light up the pond. We now leave in the social light to float over the surface of the pond. These moving lights need no timer or switch. These lights are left to move freely over the surface of the pond and it illuminates with the fall of night, with the energy provided by the sun light during the day.

Clear or colored floating lights are available in many shapes and sizes, some in the shape of water lilies or other aquatic plants. If using lights shaped like or attached to artificial plants, group the lighted plants together in the middle of the pond.

Now arrange the floating lighted fountain deep in the pond. Well, this will benefit you in two ways, that is, it brings you light and prevents odors. It’s easy to add attractive, dramatic accents to ponds with the floating fountain. For the working of the floating fountain, it requires an electric source and a fastener.

More attractive and effective lighting is possible with the installation of lights around the edges of the pond and by proper spacing of the lights. This again depends upon the brightness of the light that is needed. To attain this we must have light fixtures, cables, fasteners and transformers.

For an underwater light cable to be plugged, we would require an outdoor GFCI receptacle. An electric box is to be fixed on a pole near the pond so that we can reach it easily. This GFCI must be covered with a waterproof cover to keep the lights plugged in.

Troubleshooting The Electric Iron

April 27th, 2010

Although some of us consider ironing to be a boring job, but we can not do without it. Electric irons are in rise for pretty long time now and have seen many changes with the changing times, but it its primary working remains same. Since ironing is the best way to rid the clothes of the wrinkles, we can’t do without this.

With normal wear and tear and also because of constant use, these electric irons start giving troubles. Because an iron is an utmost need, we must know how to repair them if they become problematic.

Finding your electric iron in operational, the following method uses household items to fix a clogged steam iron, without resorting to industrial cleaners or professional help. However, you would require some necessary tools and items to troubleshoot the appliance. Fixing an electric iron demands for a voltage tester, screwdriver, an electrical tape and distilled white vinegar.

Use of tap water in your steam iron makes deposits of minerals in the iron making it clog. Empty the water in the reservoir and use a mixture of water and vinegar on areas that you find materials stuck. Make the same consistency of vinegar and water and put it into a spray bottle. Spray the affected areas three to four times with the solution.

Allow the solution to stand in the reservoir for at least half an hour. Position your iron in upright setting and plug it in the electrical outlet. Turn on the steam feature of the iron. Heating up of the iron will gradually unclog it by removing the mineral deposits.

Check the electrical cord and check the thermostat and replace if necessary. There are chances that wires of the electrical cord are overused and battered. Well, in that case, replace the cord itself.

If the iron doesn’t heat, make sure power is on to the outlet. Inspect, whether the circuit breaker is on or has been tripped by someone. Homes that are protected with the GFI outlet should first reset the GFI and then plug the iron again.

On noticing that the sole plate of iron has gone dirty and is leaving stains on clothes, the iron must be plugged out and the sole plate be cleaned with a soft cloth and baking soda. In case the sole plate is non stick, use of soft cloth and soapy water is recommended. If the iron still does not respond, an electrician may be called in.
