The Working Of A Circuit Breaker
Often, the faulty circuit is responsible for the electrical short-circuits which in turn damages the costly home appliances. A circuit breaker plays a vital role in preventing such a loss. Circuit breaker is a device that shuts off the power supply on account of an error in any of the electrical circuits.
Everybody knows that when current flows through any substance including a wire in our case, it generates heat. The amount of heat produced is directly proportional to the amount of current flowing. Also, flowing current from a wire creates a magnetic field around the conducting medium. Higher the current flow, more is the magnetic field. These are the two basic principles of modern day circuit breakers.
Circuit breaker has a switch-like handle which enables you to interact with the breaker device. The switch can have as many as four positions: ‘On’, ‘Off’, ‘Tripped’ and ‘Reset’. It is not difficult to find the on and off positions but tripped and reset positions are a bit complicated to switch to. To trip the breaker, you need to switch the handle in the middle of the ‘on’ and ‘off’ position. Moreover, it can be marked red as well for easy interface. To reset the breaker, glide down the switch towards ‘off’ position gently and a clicking sound authenticates the resetting of the breaker.
Before you reset and turn on the breaker, follow some safety tips mentioned below. If it is turned off already then it indicates that something has gone wrong inside the home. Hence, do not switch on the breaker before fixing the concerned problem. If you continue without repairing the fault, the breaker can trip again. As a temporary solution, you can plug out the appliance from the main supply.
The internal circuitry of a breaker resembles the circuitry of an ordinary switch in your home. Toggle handle, levers, springs etc. play an important role in the internal working of both the devices. Similar to a regular switch, breaker also consists of a bimetallic switch that determines the increase in heat.
Circuit-breakers are convenient because they have same current ratings as fuses. However, the difference is that one can use breakers over and over again by resetting them.
