Add Beauty To Your Garden With Flower Petal Lamp

June 10th, 2010

Ornate and different fixtures can add a lot of character to your home. Flower petal light fixtures–most notably, the Tiffany flower petal lamp–will add a splash of color and decoration to any room and any decor.

Learning how to hang a flower petal lamp involves choosing the perfect location near an electrical plug and securely fastening the lamp to a ceiling hook. Moreover, you have to be handy with some of the items like hammer, stud finder, stepladder, pencil, drill, protective eye wear, metal hook with anchor, pliers, soft rag and chain.

Having acquired them, choose a location to install them. However, it is better to install them at a place where the electrical outlet is already available.

Set your stepladder firmly on the floor, and use a stud finder to locate a wood support beam in the ceiling. Make sure to use a drywall anchor screw that opens inside the wall for added security. Mark the proper location with a pencil.

Choose the proper sized anchor that is attached to the metal hook. Take a drill bit of size of somewhat smaller than the width of the screw. Protect you eyes with working goggles while doing the drill work.

Drill into the ceiling stud about half the distance of the length of the screw. Back the drill bit out of the ceiling and wipe away any drywall flakes.

Attach the screw to the plant hook by screwing the two pieces together. Turn the screw just a few times to allow plenty of anchor space for installation into the ceiling. Screw the hook and anchor into the drilled hole by hand until the screw threads grab tightly to the wood stud. Wrap a soft rag around the hook to prevent damage and use pliers to tighten the hook flush with the ceiling. Wipe away any remaining drywall dust with the rag.

Make connection between the hook and lower petal lamp using chain. Make adjustments with the height of the lamp, if required. You are done up with the installation process, here.

How To Quiet A Loud Ceiling Fan ?

June 8th, 2010

A noisy ceiling fan can be one of the most annoying things to deal with and it is worse if it is in your bedroom and you are trying to sleep.

Mending such a fan is very easy and any owner can do it without the help of a trained electrical mechanic. Before getting on to the job, one must have some tools like a screwdriver and a balancing kit for ceiling fans.

First of all, determine if the fan is properly hanged onto the ceiling. Inspect the canopy for any gaps between it and your ceiling. If you observe any gaps, correct by reinstalling the canopy.

Fans start producing noise if any of the screws is left loose. Inspect each screw used in the system and tighten them fully if found loose including that of the canopy.

Every care should be taken while replacing a new canopy that its screws are fully tightened. Also, make sure that the screws holding the blades are not loose. These screws if left loose may misbalance the fan and may start giving noise.

At very times, the tightening of the screws itself solves the problem of noisy fans. In case the problem is still unsolved, we may once again try to balance its blades. For carrying out the balancing of a ceiling fan we may purchase a balancing kit from a nearby hardware store and using this balancing kit, the fan can be balanced in a very short time and with a minimum labor.

Pay attention to make out which of the blade is making the sound. Once you have determined the noisy blade, move the weight clip to different places on the blade until you have no noise.

Also, there are chances that some components like bearings of the fan are worn out. You can get out of this temporarily by lowering the fan speed. However, to solve this problem on permanent basis, better replace the worn out bearings.

Steps To Put Up The Bathroom Exhaust Fan

June 7th, 2010

Bathroom is a place where due to the presence of moisture and humidity, organisms like mold, spores and mildew generally build up. This further causes odor and stains in the bathroom. Mold and mildew build up causes the paint to peel off the walls and ceiling. Moreover the bathroom door and cabinet doors also get deteriorated from warping.

Lots and lots of other methods are available in the market to cure this problem of molds, but these will not prevent it from happening for the next time.

Installing a ventilating fan in your bath will help eliminate fogged-up windows, steamy mirrors and stale odors. But more importantly, it will help prevent moisture-related problems, such as the growth of mold and mildew. Once you have decided to install, it’s time to make sure that you have all of the necessary tools. You will need things like bathroom exhaust fan, hacksaw and some other carpentry tools.

Before starting the process, the fan we are going to install should be chosen as per the size of the bathroom. Also, select a proper location for fixing the fan so that a proper route can be provided to the gases to be drawn out. These should either be the one which can be fixed on ceiling or on the wall of the bathrooms.

Cut the hole in which the exhaust fan will be mounted. Use a small handsaw or a reciprocal saw to cut an opening following the template tracing included with the bathroom exhaust fan. Cut a 1/8-inch in from the template edge. This allows room to remove more material if needed.

Next step is to make wiring with the main light and for this look over the wiring leading to the bathroom main light. This is where you will wire in the exhaust fan. Connect the exhaust fan wiring to the house wiring following the wiring schematic provided with the fan.

The ventilation duct supplied with the fan should now be laid from the bathroom exhaust fan to the roof leading outside. It should be ensured that the venting end of the duct points downwards in order to prevent rain and other objects entering into it.

Since, electricity is not the right place to experiment, better shut off the main power supply when indulging into any of the electrical task. Moreover, hire the services of an expert in case of confusion.

Specifications For Replacing A Fluorescent Bulb

June 2nd, 2010

Long ago, you did not have enough choices when it came to the replacement of a fluorescent light bulb. However, modern day market is flooded with a huge variety of fluorescent light bulbs. Such a huge variety makes it difficult for a novice to choose the appropriate replacement fixture. In order to replace a light bulb in correct manner, you have to follow certain guidelines.

Fluorescent lighting fixtures are long tubes that come in various weights. Nowadays, they are also available in U shapes and circular shapes. The U-shaped tubes are commonly used underneath the cabinets with ballast at one end. In case of circular bulbs, they are used in sockets.

Fluorescent bulbs are used for providing bright, white and glaring lights. They are available in vast colors and in different shades of white.

Replace the old fused bulb with exactly the same sized new fluorescent bulb. Also, take care of the wattage limit of the bulb. Never try to replace the old bulb with a bulb which can exploit the maximum wattage. Doing this will support overheating in the ballast and the possibility of fire would increase.

Among the main parts of the fluorescent bulb, a bulb holder, ballast, a switch and a starter are quite significant. While the holder is responsible for holding the bulb in place, switch is responsible for turning on and turning off the bulb. Ballast and starter provide the necessary electric current to the bulb that ionizes the gas inside the bulb to illuminate the bulb.

How can you determine the appropriate time for the replacement of a fluorescent light bulb? Answer to this question is quite difficult as fluorescent bulbs do not show any signs of ‘burn out’ like in incandescent lamps. When one side of the light becomes darker than the other, it may be the time to arrange a replacement.

If you are not aware of the condition of the ballast then try checking the bulb or the tube in the other working ballast or socket.

Before changing the fluorescent light bulb, turn off the main current supply. Now, unscrew the bulb or push the tube to one side and pull it down and out. Similarly, put the replacement tube or bulb inside the socket. Do not try to fit the tube into ballast forcefully as it can spoil the ballast.

How To Lighten Up Sun-rooms With Chandeliers ?

May 30th, 2010

Outdoor chandeliers are a great way to light up your sun room. Sun rooms are different kind of room in a home. With added moisture and humidity, and possible water from a hot tub or sauna, this is not a bad place to choose a chandelier rated for outdoor use.

UL recommended outdoor chandeliers should be used for the houses in wet and damp areas. These have a sealed circuitry that prevents the moisture from getting into the wiring. Switches are covered with a rubber film so as to avoid any chances of an electric shock. Heavy outdoor cables with a grounded plug are their added features.

In case the lights of the sun-rooms are too bright for the eyes, the outdoor chandeliers with shades can be opted. These provide dimmed and smoothed lights. These shades are made up of a fabric that is waterproof and is coated with vinyl to safeguard them against mildew, mold or water damage.

Outdoor chandeliers are available in the market in various colors and patterns. A tan or a beige shade should be chosen for a soothing light. When the sun sets, we may choose bright shades for the sun-room. Preferably a white or off white one would be best suited.

Another nice enhancement can be to use a dimmer on the light switch. Depending on the level of natural light available at a particular time, a dimmer allows you to adjust the light to your heart’s content.

A sealed glass shade prevents more of the possible moisture invasion. Also a sealed glass shade helps to keep insects from collecting. Up turned glass shades are the worst for trapping bugs. Or choose a down turned shade. This too prevents the accumulation of flying insects.

Most advantageous part of having a chandelier for your sun room is, these consumes very low voltage and thus, helps preventing huge electricity bills.

All set to buy the chandeliers. Beforehand, confirm the prices and quality of the chandelier by roaming in the market. Moreover, the best option is to get it online.

How Does A Hair Dryer Operate ?

May 28th, 2010

Washing, drying and styling of hair is an everyday affair most of us are conversant with this process. Hair would naturally dry up in due course but to hasten this drying, we make use of hair dryers. Although science does not agree that we catch cold because of wet heads, people do not like wet head for long time.

Have you ever wondered what those components are inside a hair dryer that lets you blow hot air through your hair without burning your scalp? Keep reading to find out why you won’t sizzle.

When you turn on a hair dryer, flow of electricity enters the device. The electrical energy is then harnessed and used to power a small fan that sits inside of the hair dryer. Although it is similar in shape to a water wheel, it differs in purpose because it actually uses the electrical energy to create movement. That movement is then used to create airflow.

Applying power to the hair dryer allows the motor to start spinning the fan, which in turn draws air in through the air inlets in the side of the hair dryer. A safety screen prevents other objects from entering the inner workings of the hair dryer.

The air that is pulled by the fan is the, through a tube is directed onto the hair to dried. But before that the air is made to heat-up.

A coiled wire on an insulating board is the main mechanic for heating the air that is pulled into the hair dryer. The wire is made of a material that is a poor conductor of electricity, so when an electrical charge is sent through it, it becomes hot instead of conducting the charge. It is also resistant to rust, which is important because many other materials will quickly oxidize when exposed to the amount of heat that the wire endures.

When the air drawn into the hair dryer is forced through the barrel of the hair dryer, it travels through the heating element because of the way the case is shaped.

Hot air is controlled by a temperature switch, which controls the amount of electrical charge that is pumped through the wire when you turn on the dryer. Nowadays, you can rapidly dry and style your hair using a hair dryer.

Merits And Demerits Of Ionic Hair Dryer And Non-Ionic Hair Dryer

May 23rd, 2010

Since their introduction in the 1920s, hair dryers have slowly made their way into practically every bathroom. Purchasing, hair dryer forces you to choose between a variety of styles, colors, technologies, usages, weights and accessories.

We shall discuss here, the two well known kind of hair dryers and these are ionic hair dryers and non ionic hair dryers. As is the case with any other thing around us, these too have merits and demerits.

Earlier when the ionic dryers were available in the market, people used to use only the non ionic hair dryers only. But with the onset of ionic dryers, non ionic appliance grows older and conventional. Since, the non ionic appliance involved drying hair with simply the heat, the ionic ones hold an edge over them. Ionic dryers include warmth air with the negatively charged ions. These help in retaining the hair moisture.

As per the manufacturers, ionic hair dryers speed up hair drying as compared to the non ionic ones. On the other hand, Good Housekeeping Institute mentioned in their study that both have equal drying time.

Ionic hair dryer makers also claim to their dryers will boost shine because they use less heat and cause less damage. Most reviewers, including the Good Housekeeping Institute, agree that ionic hair dryers do boost shine more than the non-ionic models do. Well, this is not the case with the non-ionic. These leave the hair damaged and frizzy.

When there is more shine to the hair, there is naturally less frizzy because the hair shaft is smooth and flat. Most reviewers agree that ionic hair dryers create less frizzy and fly-away hair than non-ionic models.

Hair dryers come in a wide range of prices. Generally, ionic dryers are more expensive than non-ionic ones. “Good Housekeeping Magazine” compared several models and found that although some were as expensive as $300; its favorites were in the $20 to $25 range.

The only similarity both types of the dryers have is that these need utmost care in handling. As is the case with any other electrical appliance which we close to a water source make sure that the cord does not contact the water. These machines should always be held by the handle. The body of these dryers may be hot and should not be touched.

Enhance Efficiency Of Hair Dryers Timely Cleaning

May 22nd, 2010

Hair dryers have become a commonly used device. Hair dryers also known as blow dryers are fondly used to style the hair. Although, these are available in huge variety, all comprise of basic things like motor-driven fan and the heating element.

To maintain the accuracy of its performance these hair dryers need periodical cleaning. We shall now learn the process of cleaning a hair dryer. To accomplish this task, we should have with us an electrical contact cleaner, screwdriver, light-weight household or machine oil.

Since, playing with the electricity is not advisable, we should ensure before beginning with the cleaning that the machine has been switched off and its cord has been plugged out of the electrical source.

The next important part of the hair dryer that requires cleaning is the grill of the hair dryer. In order to clean the grill and filter screen present on the hair dryer intake filter, you should slowly brush them with a vacuum cleaner or a small brush will do. Remove all the dust along with hair and lint.

Take the cover off your hair dryer with a screwdriver. Take apart your hair dryer to remove hair from the fan, motor shaft and other internal parts. You may have to spray any hard-to-remove hair with electrical contact cleaner to pry it loose.

After brushing away the dirt from the motor we loosen the brush clips. Remove the clips and brush and if these are worn out, change them for new ones.

Each end of the motor should be properly lubricated using a drop of light weight machine oil. The motor shaft also should be lubricated with the help of toothpick. This would lengthen the life of hair dryer.

With a warm and damp rag we now wipe the in and outside of the dryer and then re-fix the cover. Plug in the hair dryer to the electric source and switch it on. We shall surely notice that the running of the motor has changed and the efficiency of the dryer increased.

Benefits Of LED Landscape Lighting

May 21st, 2010

Landscape lighting is an important and often overlooked part of outdoor design. LED (light-emitting diode) landscape lighting offers many benefits for home and industrial outdoor lighting–including cost efficiency, environmental benefits and more versatility than traditional incandescent outdoor lighting.

Landscape lighting is used for decorative and functional purposes. Safety and visibility are the two most important functional reasons for using landscape lighting. LED lights can provide any level of lighting needed to provide visibility and outline safety hazards in the yard.

With the advancement in technology, today’s market provides us with numerous colors, designs and patterns. However, the most commonly used outdoor lighting design is up-lighting to provide ambient light in the area; down-lighting to provide targeted light from above. In addition to this, a dramatic accent can be provided to the yard through silhouette lighting.

LED as an outdoor lighting source, offer a huge list of advantages to the homeowners and the environment as well. Firstly, these serve the users for the long span of life of about 30 years.

The LED lights may appear costly while buying but over a period these are highly economical. This is due to the reason that one LED runs for a period longer than five bulbs of any other kind. Thus, saving on their frequent changes LED consumes 80% less power than others and cuts on the electricity bills too.

While taking up the outdoor lighting projects, safety is always a priority issue. LED lights are best options for strip lighting, stair case riser and the pathway or the driveway edges.

Ideally, LED lighting finds application in illuminating mainly the staircases and driveways. These provide both the ambiance and light since these are simple to focus.

There are many types of LED lights that can be used outdoors, but they all fall into two basic types: solar-powered or 12-volt powered. Solar LED landscape lights cost less to install and to run, but 12-volt LED lights are more reliable. In addition, 12-volt lights are more difficult to install, because they require laying electrical lines to each light for power.
