Advice On Grooming And Brushing Your Dog

September 7th, 2010

All dogs need some form of grooming, there is no question about that. Even hairless chihuahuas should be wiped with a damp chamois leather to get rid of loose skin and dust. However, one of the main purposes for grooming your dog regularly is so that you can check him for skin problems such as allergic reactions to flea or tick bites. Another reason is bonding. In a pack situation, dogs groom other dogs and are themselves groomed every day and dogs like it.

Therefore, you should groom or brush your dog at least once a week and take him to a dog parlour every three, four or six months depending on how fast his hair or fur grows and whether you can manage it or not. Having said that, you will find grooming simpler if your dog’s hair is the right length, because it will not tangle so readily.

You should wash your dog every month or so and groom him at at a minimum of once week. This will ensure that your dog gets accustomed to being bathed and handled. If this is done from the puppy age, most dogs will not only accept it, but they will come to enjoy it, although there will always be those dogs that bolt for it as soon as they see a hose and a bowl. They get to know what to look out for. If you talk to him constantly, comforting him and sometimes giving a doggie treat, he should soon come to accept the unavoidable – that he is going to be bathed and groomed.

In fact, most dogs enjoy the grooming, although many only tolerate the bathing. Anyway, bathing and grooming on a regular basis will keep the job as simple as it can be. Once your dog is no longer a puppy, for example after six months or so, you might take him to a professional groomer in a so-called ‘Poodle Parlour’. By then, he should be becoming used to the routine and he will accept the treatment from strangers more readily as well.

You should look for professional groomers in advertisements in the pet store or the vet’s or simply ask your friends and neighbours for suggestions. Locating a groomer should not be problem, but you might have to try a couple before you uncover one whose manner of grooming you like or who is adaptable enough to suit your lifestyle.

When you drop your dog off at the Poodle Parlour, inquire when it will be ready to be collected up. Turn up fifteen minutes beforehand and you could be lucky enough to see first hand how your dog is being taken care of and how your dog is getting on with the groomer. This is priceless information, because it will help you make up your mind whether the groomer is getting on with your dog or not.

If the groomer is doing a good job, but your dog is nervous, you can help put him at ease. If the groomer is being a bit too rough, then you will know whether to change Poodle Parlours or merely have that groomer barred from taking care of your dog.

Tell Me About Bed Bugs

September 5th, 2010

Most people under seventy years of age in the West will not have seen bed bugs. This is mainly due to enhanced living conditions, DDT and better public education. The DDT was used in the thirties and forties and eradicated the problem in the more wealthy countries.

Bed bugs are a part of the arachnid or spider family, although bed bugs are parasites that suck blood, not all bodily fluids. They will feed on most warm-blooded animals and there is some proof that humans are not their first choice of prey.

The most widespread form of bed bugs are known as Cimex lectularius by their Latin name. They are quite small but very fast moving bugs and they are members of the spider family, although many of them do not look like spiders at all. Rather, most of them look like little beetles, until they have gorged themselves, after which they can hardly move and are at their most vulnerable.

Bed bugs feed in a similar way to mosquitoes. They insert a tube into the skin of its victim and suck blood out. It is not much to you, about a quarter of a millilitre, but is a lot to them. It permits them to live and reproduce.

Bed bugs, unlike their relatives the ticks, are not known to convey any diseases. In fact, they are one of the few insects that do not pass on a disease.

A bedbug bite is similar to an ant bite in appearance, but it will itch like a mosquito bite. You will most likely experience a slight swelling with a red spot in the centre and an itch. Not much more.

You can check for bed bugs pretty easily by soaking a bar of soap in a little water for half an hour while you lie on your bed reading a magazine. Then get up and fetch the soap, wet-side down and throw back the bed clothes. Pat up the bed bugs, if there are any with the soft soap. This is a speedy method of getting rid of a small number of bed bugs, but cannot be seen as a resolution.

With regards to the annihilation of an infestation of bed bugs, it depends where you are. If you are in a hotel, the bar of soap will be proof enough of a problem and it is the hotel manager’s duty to provide a solution. If they do nothing, report the hotel to the local tourist bureau.

If you live in rented accommodation, it is your landlord’s responsibility to solve the predicament. If he or she is reluctant, then go to the city hall and seek advice.

If the issue is in your own home, then take the skirting boards and architraves off. Spray or paint very powerful insecticide onto the wall and refix the woodwork. If you are still concerned, seal the woodwork off on all sides with mastic or silicone.

These measures will ensure that your house will be free of bed bugs.

Some Information About Cochlear Implants For The Deaf

September 4th, 2010

There are some types of deafness which cannot be enhanced by wearing a normal hearing aid, that is a hearing aid which receives the sound via a microphone, amplifies it and then replays it into your ear. Luckily some of the people who suffer from these problems can be assisted in other ways.

One of these other ways is a cochlear implant. A cochlear implant device has to be surgically implanted into the ear. Cochlear implants do not amplify the sounds entering the ear, but instead they stimulate the functioning auditory nerves inside the cochlear. This is achieved with small electrical impulses.

These cochlear devices are very intricate and consist of quite a few tiny parts including a speech processor and a radio transmitter. As you can can imagine, this is rather an expensive operation and is still nor carried out routinely, not least because there are other options that can tried first.

The up-side is that most people who have had the operation have said that it was worth the money and that the results were fantastic. In fact, most patients said that their hearing was nearly as good as normal.

There is a huge improvement in hearing immediately after the operation, but hearing continues to improve for six months or more afterwards by means of tuning sessions and the body’s natural adaptation. The results are a lot slower for children as it takes them longer to become accustomed to the electrical stimuli.

Certain types of background noise can be a problem, but some of these issues can be tuned out, which is one of the reasons why it normally takes more than six months to get the device attuned to you and your way of life.

For this reason the degree of success from having a cochlear implant depends chiefly on the patient. Some of the factors playing an important role in the success of the implant are: how long, you have been deaf; how long you heard sounds before you became deaf; how well your brain remembers those sounds and the condition of the cochlear and its auditory nerves

As mentioned above, the operation and tuning of a cochlear implant is costly. Naturally, the final price tag depends on which doctor installed the device and where he or she is to be found, but you could say that it will cost at least $50,000 and maybe twice that much. Luckily, most health insurance plans will pick up some of the costs, but the percentage they will pay varies a great deal.

The cochlear implant is the only device on offer at the moment to help sufferers with some types of permanent hearing disability – especially total deafness.

Until 2000, children could only receive this operation if they were above the age of two years in the United States, but this age limit was then lowered to one year. About two- thirds of those who have undergone a cochlear implant have been children and the majority of the children were between two and six years of age.

Tips For Eating Insects

September 1st, 2010

It sounds quite revolting to the majority of Westerners that many people around the world eat insects on a frequent, even daily, basis. This is not always only because edible insects are so plentiful and money is so in short supply. In a lot of countries, some insects are thought of as a delicacy.

I am not an expert on edible insects in every country, but there are so many kinds of edible insects where I have been, that there have to be similar edible insects in every country except the North and South Poles.

Eating insects may sound revolting to us, but I have met individuals who think that it is just as revolting to eat prawns, shrimps and lobsters. After all, they are merely insects of the sea of a kind. And just like eating shrimps or lobster, insects are either the main or only part of the dish. In other words, they are considered just as much a luxury as shrimps, prawns or lobster is in the West.

Insects are not eaten with rice, chips, in a sandwich or with a sauce. Rather insects are deep-fried in a wok and eaten from a plastic bag like chips. Insects are not mixed when cooked either. You buy fifty grammes of one and fifty grammes of another and they are eaten separately.

Insects are abundant and they do not have to be bred, unlike cattle. One interesting fact is that beef is about 20% protein whereas insects are between 65% and 80% protein. Surprising, eh? Fifty grammes of insects provides more protein that a half-pound beef steak and they have scarcely any cholesterol.

If you would like to include insects in your diet, then you will need to examine the subject with regard to your own country, but I will give some pointers. In the insect world, yellow means ’stay away from me, I am poisonous or do not taste nice’, so it is best not to eat them. Most insectivores stay away from hairy insects too, so spiders and house flies are out as well. Mosquitoes are too small as are ticks and many other insects.

While some caterpillars can be eaten, some cannot, so leave them to the experts. The best insects to go for are beetles, termites, larvae, grubs, grasshoppers, crickets and some night-flying insects.

In Thailand, for example, most people will eat insects for a luxury, although some people eat them every day. In the north-east and in the north-west, people might eat insects once a month. In the centre, like Bangkok and Pattaya, cooked insects are sold on the streets, so they are easily available. They are eaten regularly in the south and in the east, which is called Isaan.

However, all over Thailand, you can witness ultraviolet lights over insect traps. These families will either eat the insects themselves or sell them on to a merchant. I have also seen individuals collecting a fly which only comes out at night after rainfall. You can gather thousands in an hour by putting a bowl of water under a street light. The insects become stunned by the light and spiral down into the water where they drown.

How To End Cocaine Addiction And Begin Recovery With These Great Ideas

August 31st, 2010

Cocaine addiction and recovery might be incredibly difficult, and it’s tougher for some than others. The good news is that cocaine is not, really, the most addictive drug in the world when it comes to CHEMICAL addiction. Or at least, it’s really no more addictive than, say, junk food and soda pop in that way. Yes, your body will crave it, but this isn’t where the heart of cocaine addiction lies. The bad news: Cocaine is one of the most EMOTIONALLY addictive drugs in the world.

Cocaine makes you feel like a superhero, it really does. It makes you feel hundreds of feet tall, beautiful, powerful, sexy, strong. On cocaine, you feel like you could fight the world while driving a convertible through a ring of fire and land in a swimming pool full of supermodels… This is why the crash is so hard. When you come back to reality and realize that that wasn’t you, it can be painful… And you want some more cocaine, immediately. Who doesn’t want to feel like that all the time? Unfortunately, cocaine is not the way, and… It can even kill you.

If you’re dealing with addiction and ready to quit, follow these steps…

Stop Doing It

Easier said than done, right? Well, some people can kick cocaine just like that, while others suffer a more severe addiction. Take any drugs you have and get rid of them right now. Don’t save a little “just in case”, get rid of all of it. Stop associating with whoever your hookup is or whoever enables you (if they happen to be a close friend, just tell them you’re not paying for cocaine anymore and see if they still hang around WITHOUT the drugs to keep the friendship together).

Get a Healthier Addiction

For many of us, an addiction is more of a need to fill some void in our lives than anything. We may not be depressed, we may not be necessarily chemically addicted, we just need something to do, something that we can push and push and push. If this is you, you may be able to quit by getting a healthier addiction. After you’ve sobered up, you can replace drugs with working out or drawing or writing or any number of other interests. They’re all more rewarding than drug and alcohol addiction.

Join a Program

If you’ve tried both of the above and you’re still hooked, then it’s time to wave the white flag of surrender and ask for help. You can either do this yourself, or you can wait until your friends and family stage an emotionally draining and humiliating intervention. Your call.

If you know a person who is ready for treatment, than this rehab for alcohol web site at rehabforalcohol.net can certainly help.

Some Information On Oticon Hearing Aids

August 26th, 2010

The sense of hearing is very complicated, which is why things can go wrong at many junctures. Therefore, there are a variety of kinds of hearing aids to overcome these different problems. Besides this, people have their own predilections for the designs of hearing aid that they would like to wear and then there is the cost issue. Therefore there are at least three factors to be considered before anyone selects a hearing aid.

Three considerations, but it means that there has to be a lot of different choices. Even if you take the simple behind-the-ear (BTE) device, some people will be looking for a brown one, others a white one. Some will want it to be as small as possible, others will not care too much and some will want the hearing aid built into the frames of a pair of glasses. The range of Oticon hearing aids covers many of the bases.

Oticon hearing aids are produced in a wide range of types, styles, and price bands. Some are the very latest cutting edge technology and therefore more expensive while others are more basic and a lot cheaper. It is similar to the phenomenon with mobile phones, some want the latest handsets that take photos, video and receive the Internet, while others simply want to use it as a telephone.

Two such simpler models in the range of Oticon hearing aids are the Oticon Go Pro and the Oticon Atlas. These are comparatively simple devices, yet the sound quality is first-rate. They also offer several automatic functions, so that you do not have to play around with them to be able to hear all right again. They are a good choice for those who are not interested in the technology, they just want to be able to hear again.

There are Oticon hearing aids for all degrees of deafness, but most of the devices they make will work well for moderate hearing loss. After all, the total loss of hearing is quite rare. The Oticon Delta fall into this class for mild hearing loss and the Sumo DM caters for those with a more severe hearing impairment. Both of these devices are surprisingly light on their consumption of batteries.

Most hearing aids focus on amplifying the frequencies of human speech, but this means that the wearer can lose out on bird song and other natural, background noises. The Safran was designed to amplify these sounds too, so that the sound that the wearer hears is more natural, more like what everybody else hears, while still giving a slight emphasis to speech tones though.

If you want sophistication and hi-end technological features, then that is also included in the range of Oticon hearing aids. Check out the Syncro. The Syncro uses a chip to sort meaningful sound from background noise and stress it. The Epoch helps the user to distinguish where the sound is coming from and the Rise can be used with Bluetooth and MP3 players as well.

Many Oticon hearing aids are binaural, which means that if you wear two hearing aids, they will interrelate in order to give you a far better sense of hearing and if you suffer from occlusion then try the Tego which was designed to triumph over it.

Controlling Bed Bugs

August 25th, 2010

Most individuals in the West will never see a bed bug. In one way, they are an old-time household pest. This is because houses are cleaner and mattresses are man-made. Having said that, you may come across them. You may not see them, because they hide during the daytime and only venture out at night. However, the next morning you will know that they have visited because you will have bite marks. Bed bugs suck your blood.

Bed bugs will trek a fair way to get to you and then will go home for a pleasant day’s sleep, although sometimes they cannot get home if they have eaten too much. Bed bugs normally like to live in cracks and holes like behind skirting boards.

One method of testing for bed bugs is to leave a bar of soap in half an inch of water for half an hour while you lay on the bed reading a magazine. Then, get up and fetch the soap, wet side down. Pull the bedclothes back swiftly and if you have bed bugs dab them with the soap. They will be drawn by your body heat, but you will have to be snappy, because they are very fast when they have not eaten. If you are in a hotel, you will now have verification for the hotel manager.

So, if your house has an infestation of bed bugs or if you simply want to give it a clean sweep, just to make sure, how do you do it?.

Perhaps the best place to start is your bed. Is the mattress OK? If it is torn either sew it up good and tight or buy a new one. Change your sheets at least once a week, it is not only more hygienic, but you will also be able to inspect for stragglers that have not made it home.

Next, inspect your skirtings. Are they loose, ill-fitting or even decayed? If so, have them repaired or renewed. While the skirtings are off, soak the brickwork or plaster behind there with a strong insecticide and then put the skirtings back tight. If you are still concerned, seal them top and bottom with mastic or silicone.

The next step is to spray your floors and carpets, the whole floor space with permethrin. Permethrin will kill fleas, ticks, woodlice, bed bugs and spiders for up to six months and it will resist washing as well. You should now be free of the little blighters.

If you are in a hotel, bed bugs are unacceptable no matter which country you are in and it is the hotel manager’s responsibility to get rid of them. Otherwise, get a tin of permethrin or some flea powder and spray or dust it along the base of the skirtings. If they are in your mattress, have it swapped for an undamaged one and try the soap test again.

If you are in rented accommodation, ask your neighbours if they have the same issue. Be tactful, some people may be too embarrassed to disclose it. You will have to inform your landlord as it is his responsibility to manage such pests in his buildings. If he or she is reluctant to help, say, in as pleasant a manner as possible, that you cannot live like that and that you will have to seek some suggestions from the council. That should gee your landlord up.

The Art And Science Of Gemstone Energy Medicine

August 25th, 2010

Gemstone energy medicine is the art and science of bringing health and harmony to all aspects of your body and being. It employs therapeutic-quality gemstones or oral remedies imparted with the energies of these gemstones. By using these gemstones or gemstone remedies in certain ways, you can help prevent, treat, and diagnosis health conditions. These benefits are gained by working with the gemstones in the body’s energy field. This energy field includes the aura that surrounds the body, plus the energetic counterparts of physically manifested tissue.

One premise for gemstone energy medicine is the principle “as above, so below.” The body’s energy field exists “above” at a higher vibration than physical tissue. In other words, physical tissue is a manifestation of its energetic counterpart. Health issues, disease, poor organ function, tissue weakness, inflammation, pain, and even injuries are an outcome of poor health in the energetic fabric. When you improve the health and harmony of your body’s energies, this improvement will manifest in the physical tissue.

To address the very roots of poor health in your energetic fabric, gemstone energy medicine also works at the emotional, karmic, and mental levels. Thus you can address the influences that cause energetic disharmony in the first place. Gemstone energy medicine is therefore ideal not only for treatment of manifested health issues, but also for preventive therapy. By using the gemstones or gemstone remedies that you are attracted to, disharmony at higher levels of your being will be corrected before it manifests physically.

Gemstone medicine practitioners respect the innate intelligence of the body, and recognize that this intelligence exists at various levels and body centers. Levels of intelligence include the molecular, cellular, organ, organ system, and whole body, as well as the emotional, karmic, mental, and spiritual. Intelligence centers in the body can be found in the heart, head, stomach, and more specifically, in each of the chakra centers.

Using gemstone therapy to clear and open these intelligence centers helps a person make better choices in all aspects of life, such as what foods to eat, what to do when challenged by relationship problems, how to succeed financially, what therapies will best treat a certain health condition, and even which gemstones to use for self-therapy.

Diagnosis of the energetic causes of health conditions is an advanced study. By applying therapeutic gemstones in the aura, a gemstone therapist can determine the types of energetic anomalies and imbalances that underlie a physical health condition.

A gemstone therapist would compare the gemstones that a client’s energy field commonly attracts, including the purpose of these gemstones and their anatomical affinities, with the way the client’s energy field interacts with the gemstones. This process can paint a picture of the energetic nature of the disharmony and give clues about how to alleviate it.

Because of its energetic focus, gemstone energy medicine is a complementary modality. You can use it in conjunction with herbs, allopathic drugs, flower essences, and other natural remedies. It can also give you fundamental energetic support to enhance the benefits you can get from massage, cranial-sacral therapy, psychotherapy, and other types of treatments.

Isabelle is the founder of Gemstone Therapy Institute and a worldwide expert on gemstone medicine. In the 1980’s, Isabelle pioneered gem stone sphere therapy and wrote her first book, “Gifts of the Gemstone Guardians,” published under the name Ginny Katz , co-authored by Michael Katz. She’s also an intuitive healer. Visit her Gemstone Therapy website to join a free gem therapy class.

How Music Can Help People With Alzheimer’s Disease

August 24th, 2010

Listening to music may mean differently from one person to the other. However, here is one reason why all can appreciate listening to music more. Lately, a research has proven that enjoying music builds and strengthens memory.

Normal persons and those people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease had been examined. Alzheimer’s disease is very common to old people, anyway. This is a condition wherein one can not anymore remember things or can easily forget things even things very important to them.

In this study, the participants were told to stay in front of the computer and they were presented with lyrics of a song. The participants suffering from Alzheimer’s disease were able to recall the songs first when they were sung than those who are normal individuals.

The results were unexpected as the researchers initially thought that both groups would benefit from the music. Instead, the results suggested that people with Alzheimer’s disease processed information differently from normal people.

When a person listens to music, all aspects of the brain are involved. Studying the relationship between music and Alzheimer’s disease further might be beneficial to find a cure or remedy for people suffering from this condition.

Because of the results of the experiments, experts think that music helps to imprint a memory in the brain because of the wide expanse of neurons that are activated when one listens to music.

The parts of the brain that absorb music are affected more slowly in people suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. Aside from it, the association produced with a memory when there is music strongly affect to patients with Alzheimer’s disease because of this difference.

Because scientist have long recognized the importance of music to building memory and brain processing power, they have recommended letting new born babies and even unborn children listen to classical music.

Although, there a re still lots of researches that are made regarding Alzheimer’s , this findings about how music greatly affect and help memory of a person benefited already to people suffering this kind of disease.

Besides reasearch, this author also frequently pens articles about the sugar glider cage and tv wall bracket.

A Review Of The Elliptical Trainer And The Great Workout It Brings To The Heart

August 21st, 2010

As you are getting older, you may notice you just can’t keep up as much as you once did. But it’s not the age that’s doing it, it’s the pounds. Well, don’t let those pounds hold you back. Head to the gymnasium – you can do it.

Perhaps the best machine I have used is the elliptical trainer. It does a great job of moving everything around and getting the old heart pumping, but without the impact on the joints.

The elliptical is a lot like the treadmill but without the harsh treatment on the joints, like the knees and the ankles. See, the elliptical isn’t like running, it’s more sort of like swimming.

The elliptical is an excellent tool for burning off calories, but it goes way beyond that. It does a wonder on your heart, the most important muscle in your body, as well as the thigh and leg muscles.

Costwise, the elliptical is actually pretty negligible. It may cost a little bit, but it is a whole lot less than some other machines that don’t do anywhere close to as much for your body. The trainers ought to have some adjustable settings, so you can set how hard a workout you want and just keep pushing yourself and pushing yourself.

It is important to keep in mind that just because it is easy to use an elliptical trainer, it doesn’t mean that you don’t need to pay attention to its use. You really should check the settings each time you get on and off it, for example.

If you don’t already know, those bars on the side of the machine are really only meant to help you keep your balance. They’re not for resting on while you are working out. If you do that, you are just cheating yourself out of the right amount of work.

If you are having a hard time breaking yourself of the habit of resting on the bars, you can get a machine with handles that move as you do. These help with the balance issue, but you can’t really rest on them because they move with you.

In addition to exercise, this writer also frequently shares knowledge regarding gift ideas for groomsmen and mens denim.
