Deciding On The Right Pet For You

August 3rd, 2010

A good number of men and women have got a good idea just which kind of pet they desire; however, the maintenance of a family dog may cause some anxiety. Learning how to choose the best pet for you may be simple. You may have had a lot of pet dogs as a child and know you want a partner for your own personel home or you may have always desired a pet but been informed you couldn’t have one. In any case you may need to consider several key issues to dog care whenever deciding what pet fits your needs.

Very first various pets take much more care compared to others. Most dogs are very needy pets. They’re extremely sensitive when it comes to his or her masters. I know nearly all of you have heard of dogs shredding up a house when left on their own throughout the day. Dogs will get bored even if they’ve got some other canine buddies and toys and games. They require the human being interaction. A good number of dog owners take their dogs out for a walk just before work and right after work for the exercise and play time. Some other owners who work outside the house will often allow their pet dogs to go to work with them to keep them out of trouble. Cats however can amuse theirselves and as long as you put your valuables on a shelf, they can not reach and keep a thoroughly clean home they’re going to sleep, look out windows, and spend playtime with toys while you are away. Fish are another type of pet that’s normally very low maintenance except for maintaining the tank for your fish.

Family pet care is essential once you own a family pet. They require attention from their owners, positive reinforcement, education, and love. Fish are likely to be excluded out of this statement, as they only require food, suitable tank maintenance, and a few plants to maintain life, however the thing is proper family pet care is required whenever you own any pet. The final decision is going to be yours to make in selecting what the right pet is for your family. Previously I mentioned a few types of pets and little in relation to their care, now I am going to take a look at it a little more.

While dogs are higher maintenance and have to have the most training they are also among the best domestic pets to own. They can warn you of danger, alert you to somebody at the door, and give unconditional love back. A dog only asks in exchange for good care and a great deal of attention. In case you can’t be home everyday, you will want to make sure the dog has a roof over their head in case of inclement weather, along with a big yard to play in. A few dogs will be able to jump walls so it may be ideal to possess a dog run in the backyard so they can move about, but not break free.

Cats however can be high or low maintenance based on breed in addition to character. A number of cats require hours of families attention while some shirk attention. Several cats remain in a one pet residence. They do not like to share their owner’s affections and will become distressed or even mean towards the infiltrator. Others need the playmate’s attention to live contentedly. It will likely be difficult to determine just which kind of cat you have when you initially buy them as kittens as their own personalities are just developing.

Dog care is the most important factor when you are determining which dog is right for you and your house. You will want to consider all of the pet care needs of the creatures you are considering along with the breed you are looking at to determine if they’re going to have a cheerful place in your home.

Attention must be from both sides. Make training session interesting for both of you. crate training a dog Keep your voice very lively, energetic and cheerful.

Best Way To Study

May 28th, 2010

Any of you who have taken a class like anatomy, or chemistry, know how hard it is. I started taking these classes when I was an underclassmen in college. It has hard for me to balance school, with my social life, and my sport. It seemed like every other class was easy for me to study for, except for anatomy. My roommates were also in this class with me, but they all studied differently than I did. We then decided to put all of your studying techniques together to make the ultimate study plan for any challenging class.

First:

Find a group to study with. It worked out perfectly for my roommates and I because we studied together. We used the study guide to make a foundation of what we needed to learn for each test, this was great because we could then assign each person a part of the study guide to fill out. This made it so we could start learning the information faster, because we all didn’t have to spend hours filling out the study guide on our own.

Two:

Organize your notes. This is very crucial in studying for a test, especially if its for a class as difficult as anatomy. Once you know what you are going to need to study for, you must organize them in chapter order. Making key notes and re-writing the notes is the best thing to do. If you re-write the notes you will remember things faster than if you just stared at a piece of paper trying to read the answer.

Three:

Study diagrams and pictures. If you are in a class teaching you about the human body it is key that you understand where certain functions are taking place. Learn the diagrams and the pictures, this way when you reach that point in your notes you will already know the anatomy of where that certain function is taking place.

Keeping Your Dog Motivated

May 25th, 2010

Keeping the attention of your dog while training is not always easy. Dogs are easily distracted, and it is important to not allow the dog training sessions to be sabotaged by boredom. Making dog training fun for the dog and the human alike is essential to creating a happy, well adjusted and well trained dog.

Providing random positive stimuli throughout the day is a great way to keep the interest of the dog. Doing things the dog enjoys, like walking in the park, riding in the car, and playing with other dogs, are good ways to keep the dog’s attention, but you must reward him for small successes.

For instance, in order to reward the dog for coming to you when you call him, ask the dog to come to you, without giving any ideas about going for a walk, a car ride, or other treats.

After your dog has come to you and obediently sat down, attach the leash and start the reward. This can be either the afore-mentioned walk in the park, ride in the car, or anything else the dog likes to do.

Giving some kind of reward, whether a treat, a special outing, or just a scratch behind the ears, every time the dog does something you want, is a great way to maintain your dog’s motivation while you are dog training.

If your dog knows something great is going to happen every time he follows your commands, he will be more motivated to do want you want every time.

Distraction training.

When training a dog, it is important to not let distractions disrupt the training. The dog must be taught to ignore distractions, such as other people, other dogs, other animals and loud noises, and focus on what is being taught These kinds of distractions can even be used as rewards when training the dog to come when called.

For instance, if your dog enjoys playing with other dogs, whether in a local dog park or with the neighbour’s dogs, let him play freely with those other dogs. Then go into the park or garden and call your dog.

When he comes to you, give him lots of praise, treats and other rewards, then immediately allow the dog to go back to playing with his friends. Repeat this several times and praise the dog each time he comes over to you.

The dog will soon learn that coming to you means good things (treats and praise) and not bad ones (being taken away from the park).

So-called distraction training is one of the hardest things to teach, because dogs are naturally social animals, and breaking away from the pack is one of the most difficult things you can ask your dog to do. Most dogs will be understandably reluctant to leave their canine companions, but it is important to persist in dog training.

Training the dog to come to you when you call may require some creativity on your behalf at first. For instance, waving one of his favourite toys, or a lure, is a great way to get your dog’s attention and put the focus back on you. If your dog has been clicker trained, a quick click can be a good motivator as well in dog training.

Once the dog begins to get used to coming when called, you can begin to reduce and eliminate the visual cues and focus on getting the dog to respond to your voice alone. It is important that the dog responds to voice commands alone, since you will not always have the availability of a toy or other lure.

A Few Reasons A Pet Dog Could Possibly Be Aggressive

May 20th, 2010

You realize aggressive dogs can be quite scary. They’re able to frighten small children and adults too. There are a few breeds that are more prone to aggression but even so there is usually an underlying cause for aggression in dogs and finding out why your dog is aggressive can assist you in your training efforts. A dog that is calm in most circumstances will be an easier dog to have.

Sometimes aggressive behavior is because your dog wants to establish dominance. Dogs are pack animals and there is always a pecking order to the pack. The alpha dog is the leader and the other dogs follow suit. Appropriate training will make you the alpha dog or the leader. Do not allow your dog to think of himself as the leader or you will continuously encounter problems. Even so your dog may still want to establish his dominance over other dogs or animals and this may be the reason for his dominance aggression.

Another common form of aggression in dogs is territorial aggression. Your dog will relentlessly protect everything that he considers to be “his” including yourself, your home and your family. While this can be a good thing if you are threatened at some point, it can cause many problems in ordinary circumstances. It is infrequently that a family is truly threatened and if your dog’s territorial aggression is crazy it can cause issues with visitors and neighbors. Excessive territorial aggression is unacceptable behavior.

Often a dog will lash out from fear. Something scares your dog and rather than back off he lashes out and attacks. The dog will start growling, pull his ears back and tuck his tail between his legs. Many times this type of aggression is mistaken for direct aggression. Fear aggression is mostly caused by a situation that has scared the dog. He is striking out because he is frightened and does not know how to handle that fear.

Aggressive actions will often happen for no obvious reason. Nonetheless this aggression is generally misdirected. Something happens that instigates anxiety within the dog but he is not able to react to the actual stimuli so he lashes out on something else. This may be a reason for some inexplicable dog fights between two or more animals. The dog is simply not able to act on the real cause.

From time to time aggression can be the result of a biological as well as medical reason. For instance, we all recognize that a mother dog could become aggressive in an attempt to protect her litter. Less understood though is that sometimes aggression can be caused by a medical reason. For this reason it is crucial to take your dog to the vet for a thorough examination to rule out any medical issues.

Most all dogs will be calmer and have a better temperament if they are spayed or neutered. This will also make your training efforts easier and more effective not to mention the fact that there are too many unwanted and unloved dogs out there. If you are not in the dog-breeding profession it is just the responsible thing to do to get your dog spayed or neutered.

If you know the causes of why your dog is acting aggressively you are able to tailor your training efforts to fit your dog and you’ll find good results comes quite a bit easier. There is most often a reason for excessive aggression in dogs.

Your attitude is probably the most crucial aspects of training your dog. For more information on training your dog or you are interested in how to crate train puppy visit us at our blog!

Educating A Dog For Obedience

May 20th, 2010

In the event that you are going to be a dog owner you have to take into account the need for training your dog for obedience. A well-trained dog is fun to own and a pleasure to be around but a poorly trained dog that is rowdy and rambunctious causes everyone around to be miserable. As a responsible dog owner you need to make sure that your dog is well-trained and well-behaved.

A well-trained dog requires less restrictions and will not create difficulties for his owner. In fact, training a dog well will pay off in a lot of ways. A dog that has had adequate amounts of dog obedience training is able to have fewer restrictions, will always cooperate with neighbors and friends and will not create embarrassment for his owner. Proper training of a dog will always reflect well upon the owner.

Just about everyone has met dogs that were unruly, barked too much and jumped at inappropriate times or on the wrong places or people. Guests often fear the untrained dog because they don’t know how to deal with the dog’s poor behavior. Poorly behaved dogs make everyone uneasy.

Dog’s that are well-trained in obedience and will respond upon command and heel nicely are much more often welcome in public places with other people and other pets. Positive attention and good interactions with other people and other animals is also easier and more frequent. Well-trained dogs are easy to love and easier to get along with for everyone.

Any poorly behaved dog is bad for everyone but it is never because of the dog. As a conscientious dog-owner you need to make sure that your dog is properly trained. Your dog needs to see you as the “alpha dog” or the leader of the pack. That means that your word is respected and with that the affinity between you as master and your dog will be bolstered. As a result you will avert many potential problems and both you and your dog will be happier.

A dog that has completed dog obedience training and responds easily to voice commands is a safer dog. If your dog finds himself in a precarious situation such as being on a busy street, if you can get him to respond quickly to your commands and return to you and out of harm’s way you could deflect many tragedies. Also if a gate is accidentally left open and your dog escapes your yard you will be able to quickly and effectively bring him back home to you saving you time, energy and frustration.

An obedient dog is reliable around children, shows appropriate behavior in a crowd and nice manners around guests. A well-trained dog will never cause you to be embarrassed or cause awkwardness. You will be able to take your dog almost anywhere with no worries.

You will enjoy having your dog much more if you take the time, energy and money to properly train your dog. Both you and your dog will be happier.

Your attitude is probably the most important elements of training your dog. For more information on puppy training or you are interested in http://universitydog.com/ visit us at our blog!

Stop Your Dog From Barking Excessively

May 19th, 2010

Dogs bark for communication purposes. Some breeds bark more than others but all dogs bark sometimes. It is when a dog barks excessively and without good reason that everyone gets annoyed. We all appreciate communication from our dogs but nobody wants a dog that barks and barks for no apparent reason.

You’ll find usually a few reasons why a dog will bark excessively. One of the main reasons why a dog barks is because of boredom. Dogs are pack animals, they love daily exercise, interaction with others and social stimulation. If they are spending most of their time being cooped up in the house or even outdoors in the same yard everyday they may need more stimulation. Try taking your dog for more walks around the block or do some structured playtime every day. This may stop your dog from excessive barking if he barks because he is bored.

Becoming overly nervous or frightened can also force a dog to begin barking too much. Properly socialized dogs are generally calmer and much more comfortable around different people and in various situations but a dog that is not used to new things may start barking out of anxiety. Begin socializing your pet by taking him to new and different places and into new situations. Offer him praise and rewards whenever he’s quiet and perfectly behaved and soon he will not be so nervous because he will associate the pleasant treat with the situation rather than stress and anxiety.

Dogs will bark when they are asking you for something. Nonetheless, while you need your dog to communicate with you, you also do not want this type of barking to become a bad habit. If you always respond to his barking he will always continue to bark. Try to get him to communicate with you in other ways by praising him and rewarding him for other behaviors. Otherwise you are just training him to bark.

Occasionally your dog will bark too much simply because you have left home and you are not with him. This kind of barking from separation anxiety is disturbing to the neighbors and others so it is wise to try to eliminate it. Start when he is a puppy and crate him when you leave so he learns to be happy in his own space. Also never make a big issue out of leaving home but rather just sneak out quietly. He might never know that you’re gone and if he does he will not be so vocal about it.

Dogs bark to protect you and there are situations when we all would appreciate that. However, every single day when the mailman or mail person! delivers the mail is not one of those times! This is a time when socialization and training can really pay dividends. Take your dog to meet the mailman, let them become acquainted and hopefully your dog will stop barking at him everyday. Another way to get him to stop barking at inappropriate times is to distract him with a game or a treat. But in the case of your dog barking to protect you remind yourself that there may come a time when you will appreciate that so limit your training to people you know.

A professional dog trainer can give you some tips and techniques to stop excessive barking but oftentimes just more socialization and more playtimes will help stop the excessive barking. The one thing you should consider though is that your dog is often barking for a reason and you should find out what that reason is. Then you can deal with the barking.

Dogs who only bark at appropriate times are a lot less annoying compared to dogs that bark constantly. Start teaching your dog away from excessive barking when he is still a puppy and when he’s all grown up you will know when he barks he has a good reason.

Your attitude is probably the most important elements of training your own dog. For more information on dog training collars or you are interested in pet training collars visit us at our blog!

Train Your Current Puppy To Become A Nicely Behaved Dog

May 14th, 2010

Puppies and dogs are natural pack animals and most of their manners reflects that fact. Probably the most notable thing to do when you get a new puppy is to confirm your dominance. You’re the “pack leader” and you must always make sure that your puppy knows that.

Puppies will use a major sum of time trying to figure out where they fit into the chain of command. They normally do this by trying to establish their own dominance. Some breeds are more dominant than others, for example, the terrier breeds. Some of the other breeds tend to be more meek naturally.

As soon as your puppy comes home he needs to have his place in the pecking order recognized. He needs to recognize that he must be passive to you and that you and the other human family members are the prevailing members of the pack. All of the humans inside the home must be over him in the pecking order. This is not a matter of punishment but rather the way it must be in order for him to be contented and to become a trustworthy doggy citizen.

In order to prove the authority you must follow a few easy rules. If not your puppy will be getting mixed signals and it will be more problematical for you to train him and he will be mystified as to what you really want.

One of the basic rules you must follow is that the leader always eats first. Do not let you puppy have a meal before you eat. If you and your family are planning to eat at about the same time you want to feed your puppy, you should make the puppy wait. If not you can make plans for your puppy to eat at a complete separate time as you. At the start it may be helpful for your training to make the puppy come to you and wait for his food until you are ready to give it to him. You may want to teach him to sit before you put the bowl of food down.

Touching and handling a dog provide formidable signals to him about who is in charge. Your puppy may whimper and wail or even pretend that you hurt him at the beginning when you handle him for essential grooming rituals. If he does this you must totally take no notice of him and insist on finishing. You should always stick to what you begin with a puppy due to the fact he will discover rapidly when you really mean something and if you are wishy-washy he will get another perplexing sign.

The majority of young puppies use their teeth to nip and chew at things when they’re very young. This particular behavior must be stopped at once. Deliver him a sharp response of “No” and a tap if required. The pack leader never gets nipped and you are the pack leader.

It really is vital with a new puppy to show him that you are forceful so try to shun games like “tug’o'war” where he can get aggressive and show too much dominance. Just be sure you reward his good behavior with praise and treats but just pay no attention to his bad behavior as you set up obedience training. Keep these simple rules in mind and you can speedily teach your puppy to be a polite and obedient dog.

Attitude is the most important elements of training your own dog. For more information on dog training collars or you are interested in pet training collars visit us at our blog!

Boy Dog Names

May 12th, 2010

Dog owners will say that there is no proven method for choosing a good name for a new dog. Whether they have to think of girl or boy dog names, usually they will choose something that sounds cool or a name they like rather than putting some thought into what the name actually means. Popular boy dog names have a variety of meanings, but more often than not the meaning will not suit the dog it is given to. Below is a quick guide to the top five boy dog names and what they actually mean.

Undoubtedly, one of the first things you do when you get a new dog or puppy is pick a dog name for him or her. For most dog owners, this actually requires little thought. They just pick a dog name out of thin air and that is the name by which the poor animal will be known forever. However, there are certain issues that ought to be taken into consideration when going through dog names in order to make sure that you choose the right one.

Firstly, dogs can sense attitude and tone of voice better than we can. If you pick a dog name for comedy value or after someone you dislike, your dog will see straight through you. As a result, their attitudes may change or they may refuse to respond to your commands. Dogs’ names should mean something but should not be detrimental to their development so you should really take the decision of the dog name seriously.

While dogs are very clever animals, they can’t process the same amount of data that we can. Therefore, dog names should not be more than two syllables long. If they are more than that, most dogs will not respond. Max, Sam, Becky, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the names are easily heard. They understand these dog names and that will improve your probability of training them successfully.

However, dogs’ names should help them form an identity of their own. Common names don’t really allow them to do that, so finding something simple but unusual can help their characters a great deal without damaging their ability to respond to a command.

Max: This is perhaps the greatest boy dog name and the meaning is probably the reason why many people pick it for their dog. It literally means “the most”. After all, every dog owner thinks that their dog is the ‘most’.

Jake: Jake is short for Jacob, which means “conqueror”. This is an apt boy dog name, if your puppy takes over the house within moments of setting foot inside it!

Buddy: Buddy is a familiarization of Budd, which means “messenger”. This boy dog name could be apt for a farm dog or one you might possibly train to retrieve the newspaper from the porch in the morning. It is a very popular boy dog name throughout America.

Bailey: The boy dog name Bailey is French and means “steward”. This is fairly apt if your dog is responsible and sensible, so it is suitable for a Newfoundland or collie puppy.

Sam: Sam seems to mean “an answer to prayers”. This is a good boy dog name for dogs that are easy to train and are largely quiet!

Not many people consider a name’s meaning when picking boy dog names, so instead of just going with your first thought, it would be worth taking the time to choose a dog’s name that is really apt for your dog. After all, it doesn’t cost anything to spend some time thinking about your dog’s name.

Recognizable Dog Breeds Of The American Kennel Club

May 9th, 2010

The American Kennel Club has been around for lots of years. They bestow registration for dogs and can give a certified electronic or printed document that displays the lineage of a dog and all the other worthy details of the ancestry of the dog. The American Kennel Club has been the advocate for dog owners and dogs in this country for many years.

Right now the AKC recognizes greater than 160 purebred breeds of dogs. These range from the more little known like the Borzoi or the Petit Basset Griffon Venden to the more popular like the Labrador Retriever, the Cocker Spaniel or the German Shepherd.

Every one of the recognizable breeds is part of a larger category or group, which signifies the original breeding purpose of the dog and recognizes their diverse personality. Some dogs were bred for herding or hunting while a few were just bred for pets.

The breeds in the sporting group include pointers, retrievers, setters and spaniels. These breeds require regular and stimulating exercise. They are good at hunting and other field activities and they have many natural instincts for water and woods.

The breeds from the hound group were bred for hunting. These breeds regularly have immense stamina and an acute sense of smell in order to trail prey. Basset hounds, Beagles and Bloodhounds are part of the hound group.

The working group of dogs was initially bred to labor at pulling sleds or performing water rescues. The Terrier Group includes dogs that were originally bred to hunt and kill vermin. Terriers tend to have very spunky and feisty personalities.

The one group that was bred chiefly as a pet and just for enjoyment is the toy group. Just as their name suggests they tend to be diminutive but energetic. Every group has small dogs however so a small dog is not necessarily part of the toy group. Some popular breeds from the toy group are the spunky Chihuahua and the cute and gentle Cavalier King Charles spaniel. The non-sporting group is the next group and it includes such breeds as the Dalmatian and the Chow-Chow. The ever-popular Poodle is as well part of the non-sporting group.

The Herding group is the most recent classification at the AKC. These breeds were formerly part of the working group and they are working dogs. These dogs were bred to herd other animals like sheep and cows. Some examples of Herding dogs are the Shetland sheepdog and the Corgi. Each of the groups have their own special personality and you just need to look for the qualities that you want to have in your new pet.

Your attitude is probably the most crucial factors of training your own dog. For more information on dog training supplies or you are interested in pet bird training visit us at our blog!
