Deep Space Exploration Gets Safer

Many people think of space as a most quiet place, but in areas surrounding black holes, when an entity is sucked into the vacuum, a series of very loud, violent pops and crackles (yes, similar to Rice Crispies on a more gargantuan scale) occurs. Finding a measurable way to identify and characterize these sounds has eluded astrophysicists for years. Until now.

The brilliant minds over at the Brookings Institute Center for Astrophysical Awareness have made a scale so we can aptly title and identify various classifications of what scientists are now dubbing ginger sugarsnaps .

The redundancy of the name may seem comical at first, but profound space snaps are no laughing matter. Ranging on a scale of 1-1400, a profound space snap measuring 1 would be relative to say breaking up matter equivalent to that of a basketball.

A ginger sugarsnap measuring 1 would be roughly equivalent to breaking up matter the size of a basketball. While a ginger sugarsnap measuring in the 200 range would be more apt to describe a snap scheme related to a mass of a town of 100,000. A ginger sugarsnap incidence of 1300 or greater would indicate a mass of planetary significance has been collapsed by a black hole. What is the relevance of measuring ginger sugarsnaps?

Using space-time regression analysis, a well versed astronomer could use a high powered telescope with an affixed long range audiometer to grasp the size of ginger sugarsnaps occurring in deep space in order to better estimate not only the existence of other planets outside our own solar system but also the date of collapse of the entity and perhaps even lend insight into the formation of the black hole that was likely to have collapsed it.

Using the ginger sugarsnap scale to isolate and identify major astrophysical events throughout the space time continuum, scientists and astronomers will be more apt to safely plan and route deep space excursions. The last thing a space battalion commander wants is for one of their space exploration vessels to become nothing more than a ginger sugarsnap in space because they unknowingly meandered into a black hole.

Is it ironic coincidence that just when the Obama administration decided to massively deconstruct our space shuttle program, a very promising discovery and corresponding measurement scale are created that could open up the gateway to deep space exploration? Well, you will just have to decide for yourself. I am no conspiracy theorist, just an astronomy geek who is interested in ginger sugarsnaps!

Your NASA Space Shuttle Launch Viewing Vacation!

NASAs space shuttle program is coming to an end. After the planned November 12th STS-129 space shuttle mission, there will only be 5 shuttle flights left. The end of an era is at hand. Before this part of history is over, maybe you will be able to see a shuttle launch.

Those 5 final space shuttle missions will be over by September, 2010. Now is your final chance to view a space shuttle launch. If you have ever considered seeing a space shuttle launch, try to make plans to do so now.

Since space shuttle launches are often delayed, a wise thing to do would be to combine your shuttle viewing vacation with other Florida vacation activities. You can relax on Florida beaches or enjoy activities in Orlando if NASA changes its shuttle launch plans. Since Orlando is approximately an hour away from Cape Canaveral, your shuttle launch vacation can include space museums and beach fun as well as Orlando amusement park fun.

Where can you go to get a good view of a space shuttle launch? Space View Park in northern Titusville, close to the Kennedy Space Center, is a great place to see a launch. In fact, there are many good, free viewing locations in Titusville all along the river.

You can also see a launch from two places at the Kennedy Space Center- the Visitor Complex or the NASA causeway. To see a launch at KSC, you have to get tickets in advance. Astronomy: Some Facts

How many facts are there to be known or learned about all the objects and phenomenon in our entire universe? Just think: there are about 1 x 10 ^22 stars in the universe, that’s 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars; then there are many of those stars that have planets in orbit around them. Then consider the moons that orbit those planets and the comets and asteroids, the galaxies these stars form, the nebulae and black holes and everything else that’s out there. The amount of information and data is really quite mind-boggling. This article definitely will not contain every fact about astronomy, but they are very interesting facts nevertheless.

Let’s take a look at a small subset of astronomy: “the brightest stars as seen from Earth”. That’s discounting the Sun which is about 250,000 times closer than the next nearest star. It’s so bright that when the sky is viewed from the Earth, it washes out all the other stars in the sky during a phenomenon called daylight.

So, keep in mind while reading this list that according to the scale used, lower numbers are brighter. The Sun would be about -26.73, whereas the full moon is -12.6; bearing that in mind, here are the top 5:

#5 is Vega, which is in Lyra, and which means ‘falling eagle’ in Arabic. It’s about 25 light years away from the Earth, with a magnitude of 0.04.

When you are thinking about these astronomical facts, please bear in mind that the ‘brightest from the Earth’ doesn’t mean ‘largest’ or ‘brightest’. The Sun is not the largest or brightest star in the universe or even the galaxy, yet it seems so bright to us because it is near compared to the other stars.

#4 Rigel Kentaurus is a very bright, bluish-white supergiant star in the constellation of Orion. It is a binary star, with an average apparent magnitude of 0.12. It’s scientific name is Beta Orionis. ‘Rigel Kentaurus’ is Arabic for the ‘foot of the centaur’. It’s about four light years from Earth.

#3 is Arcturus. The name is Latin/Greek and means ‘guardian of the bear’. This star is roughly 37 light years away. It is in the constellation of Bootes, behind The Great Bear. It has a magnitude of 0.00

#2 Canopus. Of the top five, Canopus, the Greek name for the pilot of the ship Argo in the stories about Jason and the Argonauts, is the brightest, but because it is 313 light years from Earth, it’s only second on this list of the five brightest stars seen from Earth. It has a magnitude of -.62.

#1 is Sirius, which translate from the Greek as ’scorching’. It’s also sometimes called the ‘Dog Star’ because it is the brightest star in the constellation of Canis Major, which means ‘The Big Dog’ in Latin. It is situated only 9 light years from Earth, which makes it easily the second closest of these top five. It has a magnitude of -1.44, which makes it very easily the brightest star that can be observed in the night sky.

These few data don’t even scratch the surface of subject of astronomy but it’s something for you to think about the next time you gaze up into the night sky.

If it’s above 5 lbs, it will be too dense for you to get what you want, and the extra money you spend will leave you with something worse.

News From Mars

Only last weekend the JPL team which is leading the operations of the two rovers on Mars declared alert after the on board computer of Spirit has rebooted twice .The robot communicated with the Earth ground station Friday as well as in weekend but the transmission was blurred although physically speaking the board parameters were nominal (the solar panels produce sufficient energy, the batteries are loaded and the external temperature are normal).

Spirit has 2 ways of communicating with Earth: either through direct transmission, indirect transmission, or using the UHF band to redirect the date to the satellites in orbit around Mars.

Last weekend the communication was set to go on using the main on board antenna but it seems that one reboot took place during this communication. For now the reasons for this event were not discovered but for security improvement the choices was not to use the antenna anymore.

In the following period the accent will go on the physical data collecting for the onboard equipment downsizing the data resulted from scientific measurements especially in order to help the research team find out the source of the malfunction.

One of the suspicions refers to the software which was replaced last month but on the other hand the same software operates the other rover and there didnt appear any kind of problems. Another chance can be the fact that the electronic became old.

The rovers turn 5 in January and although the working parameters are normal, a thorough investigation could unveil malfunctions that can only add to the list of already known problems. (Spirit operates since 2006 with only 5 of the 6 wheels).

Momentarily parked on Home Plate (Spirit) and on Endeavour Crater (Opportunity), the two rovers are waited the date of 21 April when Mars came at a full orbit of 23 month around the Sun and in the closest point to it. The rise of the temperature and the dust storms accompanied the phenomenon and endangered the scientific experiments ran by the two robots.

Because the solar energy is responsible for the functioning of the electrical gear the operations team had to make a compromise between the security of the robots and the continuance of the scientific experiments.

Astronomy: Screensaver

Astronomy is the study of outer space. It is a serious science, but also a very pleasurable hobby. Therefore, whenever an astronomy picture of the day is offered to people, they usually take it. There are plenty of such pictures to choose from, and plenty of interesting objects out there to keep people looking.

NASA of course is a primary source for an astronomy picture of the day. This site NASA.gov shows a new image each and every day. There’s also another section that shows video footage. This could be used to create your own image site. Saturn’s moon Enceladus was featured on November 5, 2008.

That photo was taken by a passing spacecraft. It can reproduce details the size of a bus. The ice on this moon reflects as glare, nearly 100% of all the sun light that strikes it. So you would need to wear sunglasses! This moon is so unusual that Cassini will continue to fly by for more images later in its mission.

NASA retains an archive of all the astronomy image of the day dating all the way back to June 16th, 1995. It was a ‘what if’ photo of the Earth posing as a neutron star. The footage is a computer generation. The most noteworthy feature is that the constellation of Orion is visible twice. This is because even light from behind a neutron star is visible since the dense star bends the light around it. This causes some objects to be seen twice.

The entry for the 8th of September, 1995 was an amazing picture of the internal section of the ‘Milky Way’ galaxy taken by NASA’s COBE satellite. This area is usually not visible because of the dust masking it. But COBE scans in infrared, so produced that amazing picture of our very symmetrical galaxy.

The astronomy picture of the day was identical on January 1st, 2000 and January 1st, 2001, the reason being that both dates displayed this picture is that most people considered the year 2000 as the first year of the third millennium.

However, the third millennium actually commenced on January 1st, 2001. NASA reasoned it was just better to just go with the flow and do it on both dates. apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap010101.html shows mankind’s view of the universe as it progressed from mere objects circling the Earth, all the way to the ‘Big Bang’ creating the universe as we see it today.

Space Shuttle Retirement: Why is NASA cancelling the Shuttle?

NASA is cancelling its space shuttle program and retiring its fleet of shuttle spacecraft. The planned space shuttle retirement will put an end to a mighty era of space research and learning. Unless NASA extends some of the remaining 6 space shuttle flights, there will be no more space shuttle missions after the year 2010.

The space shuttle is the first reusable spacecraft in the world. Launching like a rocket, the space shuttle can maneuver in orbit like a spacecraft, and then land like an airplane on a runway. The space shuttle is NASA’s first spacecraft which has the capability to take large satellites up into orbit and then return them back down to Earth.

An extremely useful vehicle, the space shuttle has proved its reliability. The shuttle is the most complex spacecraft ever designed and built. The space shuttle has been relied upon to lift heavy components and supplies to the International Space Station. The shuttle has boosted more than 3 million pounds of cargo into orbit since the first shuttle flight on April 12, 1981.

Since 1981, more than 600 people have flown as crew members on space shuttle missions. The space shuttle today is even more capable than it was when it first launched. Modifications and updates to the original design have made the space shuttle even safer and more reliable than before.

The Space Transportation System (STS) is the official name of the space shuttle orbiter, the large external tank, and the two slender solid rocket boosters. The space shuttle orbiter vehicle houses the crew and payload. About two minutes after lift-off, the shuttle drops the used solid rocket boosters and they fall into the ocean, where they are picked up by boats and taken to be cleaned and reused.

As the space shuttle orbiter and external tank reach orbit, the main engines shut down and the external tank drops off to fall and burn up in the atmosphere. The space shuttle opens its large payload bay doors when it is in orbit. The shuttle can use its remote manipulator arm to take satellites from the payload bay or move items over to the International Space Station.

What’s next for NASA? NASA and Congress are considering the possibility of delaying space shuttle retirement, or even of having a few additional missions before the vehicles are sent to museums. The new spacecraft system being developed is called the Constellation program. The Constellation program will have a crew exploration vehicle named Orion, which will look similar to an Apollo capsule.

The plans are for the Orion capsule to be used to ship crew and cargo to the International Space Station. Eventually, advanced versions of the Constellation program may be able to travel to the Moon or Mars. The Constellation program has many years of design work before it can be built and tested. If space shuttle retirement can be delayed, that will avoid a large gap in NASA’s manned space flight program.
