How Do You Choose From All The Hard Drives?

March 8th, 2010

Most people own a computer these days. There are many parts in a computer and sometimes, these parts need to be replaced or supplemented with other parts. Although every single computer comes with a hard drive built in, many people buy additional hard drives.

A hard drive is used to store information on a computer. This storage space will house everything, including computer programs and all the things you create and save on the computer. Every computer comes with an internal drive, but this is not always enough.

A byte is the unit which lets you know how much space is available on a hard drive. The larger the number of bytes on the drive, the more space you have. Most modern drives are able to house a number of gigabytes of data.

Replacing an internal drive is not always easy and should be done by a professional if you do not know what you are doing. When considering replacing an internal hard disk, you need to take into account that you will lose all of the information stored on it, so make sure you back up all of your data first. The data can be backed up on DVDs or on an external drive.

It is always smart to purchase an external hard disk drive. These are easy to use and will communicate with a computer via FireWire or USB connections. Some can be powered by the computer, while others will come with an adapter that plugs into the wall. An external drive is a great place to save all your data, like music files and pictures. Doing this and running applications off the internal drive will make the computer run faster.

When you are choosing from all the hard drives on sale, try to find a drive that is large enough for everything you plan to store on it. It might also be a good idea to buy a drive specifically for backing up all of your computer’s information.

What To Know About Computer Processors

March 8th, 2010

Computer processors or CPUs have been around since the 1960s and have changed a lot since that time. Thanks to the advent of transistors and semi-conductor technologies processors have rapidly become smaller and smaller.

Many features affect the speed at which the processor is able to complete its tasks. Features such as the front side bus or computer bus, the clock speed, the type of socket used for the CPU, the amount of cache and external factors such as the cooling system that has been implemented to cool the CPU.

The bus determines how quickly the CPU is able to communicate with the other components within the PC, you can think of it as an actual bus transporting the commands to and from the processor. The faster the bus can go the faster the commands get to their destination. The speed of the bus can also be affected by the type of socket that is designed with the CPU, one of the more faster sockets available is socket 7.

The clock speed of the processor is probably the most important factor governing the overall speed of the CPU, but that is not to say this is the only thing that should be considered when purchasing a CPU. The greater amount of Hz the processor can sustain the faster it can process a task. A modern technique called parallelizing helps the CPU to perform more than one task at a time and thus speeds up the time it takes the CPU to multitask, a feature similar to this is called Hyper-Threading by Intel.

The cache within the CPU itself helps to store files that are easily accessable to the CPU, this increased ease of access allows the processor to reference the files quicker and thus process them quicker, resulting in a quicker PC.

The socket of the CPU is an important aspect to consider, as mentioned it can dictate the speed of the bus amongst other things. There are many socket types available on the market and each can only be attached to a select number of motherboards so when purchasing a CPU the motherboard should also be looked at.

The cooling system of the PC can also have an affect on the CPU. Processors are designed to operate at an optimum temperature range, as the CPU and its components generate a large amount of heat without the use of a cooling system the CPU would often overheat. To combat this most modern PCs have a heatsync attached to the CPU and then an arrangement of fans to cool the heatsync and thus the CPU.

How To Choose Graphics Cards

March 7th, 2010

The Graphics Cards were introduced in 1981 in the computer industry. At that time they were only capable of generating white or green text on the monitor. Today the minimum that this item will generate on the monitor in text and pictures is 256 colors.

The resolution of a graphic is determined by this card, with the finer detail needing more dots per inch (dpi). The more complex the graphic display is to be produced, the more RAM memory is needed to create it. Your RAM and your card must be compatible.

This card creates the images that are shown on your monitor. The activities that you do on your PC will determine the type of card that will be wanted on your system. It is responsible for handling color, shading, textures and patterns that are needed to produce all the graphics.

Surfing the various web pages, playing online games and downloading files and music all cause the card to perform complex calculations to produce the graphics shown on the monitor. The more complex the operation, the more difficult the mathematical and geometric calculations needed to run the operation.

Usage of your system determines what the need is. Typing on your PC will not require a high end card or a lot of RAM for the memory as typing is at the low end of the requirements for graphics. Accessing the web and downloading are at the high end and will require more of the card and RAM.

Before making a purchase consider what your uses for the computer will be. On some systems the graphics card is part of the motherboard, and may not handle the larger calculations needed for a graphic designer. So consider these things when purchasing your system.

The Different Components Of Graphics Cards

March 6th, 2010

Most of us would be lost if we opened up a computer. There are so many different parts and wires. One of these parts is a card. Graphics cards are the way that the monitor can display a picture.

To start with, the price covers a huge difference. The cheapest product runs about forty five dollars. For the big spender, they can be right around two thousand dollars.

There are different points to consider about these cards. These include graphics memory, graphics processing unit, different speeds of components, various inputs and outputs and whether or not they come with a warranty.

The way that three dimensional images are portrayed is through the graphic processing unit. It takes a two dimensional object and projects it into three dimensions.

The memory available is dependent on manufacturer and model. The total memory ranges anywhere from one hundred twenty eight megabytes up to four gigabytes. However, most cards do not exceed one gigabyte. Memory within a video card is used to store graphic information to make the display run smoother.

Different kinds of outputs that these cards have include Video Graphics Array, Digital Visual Interface, S Video and High Definition Multimedia Interface.

Graphic cards need to be cooled. They work hard to do their job and put out a lot of heat. Different cooling methods are available. The three types of cooling systems are heat sinks, computer fans, and water blocks. This is important since a video card will stop working if it overheats.

Should there be a malfunction with the product, most manufacturers do provide warranties on their products. This means quick and free replacement of a faulty product. Of course, it must be within the time limit of the warranty.

Graphics cards are devices that are made up of many components. It is important to compare the needs one is looking for with the specifications of the product. This will ensure that the product holds up to what the buyer wants without giving unnecessary extras at a higher price.

Where To Find Cheap Laptops

March 6th, 2010

As laptops tend to be expensive, finding cheap laptops is a goal of many individuals and businesses. The price of a good laptop can cost close to 1, 000 dollars or more. The cost would depend on the functions and model of the laptop. Fortunately, there are many arenas where inexpensive laptops can be discovered, and these include: the Internet, online auction sites, factory outlet stores, the Sunday classifieds, and word of mouth.

To begin, the Internet is an excellent resource for finding good deals on laptops. Upon going to any of the major search engines, someone can type in phrases including the word laptop along with with keywords such as discount, cheap, inexpensive, etc. This will result in a number of websites that offer laptops at reduced and sale prices.

A potential laptop buyer can find listings of people who wish to sell laptops on online auction sites. Sellers on these websites typically want to have a better performance than their fellow sellers, and for this reason, they price their items at the lowest value possible in many cases. A potential buyer would just need to key in laptop in the search function of the auction site, and he or she would then be given as list of sellers who have laptops for sale. The great thing about online auction sites is that the buyer will typically have a wide variety of items to choose from.

Another area where inexpensive laptops can be purchased are factory outlet stores. These stores offer items at prices that are much less than those at retail chains. Items that tend to be more expensive like computers and other electronic devices tend to be hot items at these outlets.

Print or online classifieds of newspapers, in particular the Sunday sections, tend to be good places to look and see if any cheap laptops are available for sale. The Sunday papers contain more ads, and thus it is a good idea to see if by chance there are any discounted laptops offered for sale in the weekend classified section.

Word of mouth recommendations from family members or friends are also great ways to find out if any cheap laptops are available. Relatives and friends may either be able to tell a potential buyer what stores are good to buy cheap laptops at, or they may even know someone directly who offers discounted computers. There is no harm in a buyer’s mentioning to others that he or she is looking to buy a laptop; it is possible that by doing so, a hot lead to an inexpensive laptop can be the end result.

Despite laptops being expensive in general, there are venues where inexpensive laptops fortunately can be located. These include: the Internet, online auction sites, factory outlet stores, the Sunday classifieds, and word of mouth.

Laptops Vs Desktops, The Battle Continues On

March 6th, 2010

Today, it is very unlikely that you will not seem someone with a computer. Anyone from children to the elderly probably have some type of contact with computers. Probably the most often asked question is what should I get, a laptop or a desktop? That is a battle that laptops and desktops have been experiences for many years.

Technology moves so fast these days that you might even find that your old reliable computer of just a few months old is already beginning to be labeled obsolete. How insane is that? But if you are one that must have the newest and latest of everything, then that is probably what will happen after just a few months.

When personal computers first hit the home market, that was the only concern, the desktop computer. It still, to this very day is the most prominent computer used in the home today. It stands to reason that will all the attention it gets, that a lot of desktops have a lot more advanced features than a lot of laptops. But the cousin of the desktop is now getting more attention and some are very close to being able to do the same as the desktop.

The advantage of laptops over the desktop is of course that it has great mobility. Owning a laptop allows you freedom to take it just about anywhere that you want to go. A big disadvantage though is that if you are not careful someone can walk off with it just as easily as you took it with you.

Another disadvantage laptops suffer is storage. Sure there are some that go as high as 100 to 120GB of hard drive, but that hardly compares to the fact that some desktops can go as 500GB of hard drive. Big difference.

Battery life of laptops can be an issue as well, especially since the average battery life is probably an hour or two of constant use. This means that once the battery is low, you then have to hook it up to an outlet to recharge and be able to continue to use. There are some computers that claim to have five ours of battery life. Although this is far better than a couple of hours, it is still a far cry from what a desktop can do.

When it comes to entertainment, so far laptops fall short when compared to desktops. Desktops are capable of producing top quality music, videos, slide shows and high quality gaming. As for the laptop, they can play these same things but there are always going to be limitations to how well they can handle the media.

When it comes to upgrading a computer, the desktop is going to offer you far more ways to upgrade, such as adding extra DVD players and burners, extra hard drives and a variety of other types of upgrades. Laptops on the other hand are very hard to upgrade. You can put in a new hard drive, but there are no ways to upgrade their motherboards or their processors.

In the end however; it all depends upon what you want to do with your laptop. If you are one that wants to make a laptop their main computer, you might want to reconsider that. The desktop is probably still the best bet for a main computer. Laptops of course can be great for travel and a lot of work you would do on a desktop that can later be uploaded to your main computer. If you can afford it, you might find it to be a good idea to own both a laptop and desktop.

How To Choose An LCD Monitor

March 6th, 2010

LCD monitors are very popular amongst computer users nowadays. Before they came into existence, we were using really big and heavy screens called CRT monitors. They needed a lot of space and were not pleasant to look at. This article will give you some information on buying an LCD monitor that is right for you.

LCD screens used to be really expensive. However, since so many people started buying them and the demand increased greatly, the price dropped significantly. It is now possible to buy an LCD screen for very little money, even if it has a large screen size.

An important feature to pay close attention to for any screen is the viewing angle. While some screens will look good when being viewed from nearly any angle, others will not. If the screen you purchase will only be looked at from a straight ahead viewing angle, this specification is not very important.

The picture on nearly any computer screen will look good when you are right in front of it. This is true for screens that have a twisted nematic panel, or TN panel for short. These kinds of screens are the cheapest, but they have the narrowest angles for viewing, so do not plan to gather people around it to watch a movie.

Some screens will have VA panels, otherwise known as vertical alignment panels. These monitors will be more expensive than those containing TN panels, but not by much. This kind of screen is supposed to reproduce colors better and have more brightness than TNs. They also have wider angles for viewing and display black better than any other screen type.

The most expensive screens will contain IPS panels, which is short for in-plane switching. Though they have the best viewing angles and colors, they do not start up as quickly as VAs or TNs.
