Stuffing Your Keywords Is Not the Way To Increase Your Search Engine Ranking

February 21st, 2010

Do you own a business, want to own a business, or dream of passive income? Then you have probably stumbled on the Internet as a way to do it. And you are probably learning that SEO is the holy grail of making money on the internet. If you give this a shot, you quickly learn that SEO is a must. But, hopefully after you read this, you’ll see that keyword stuffing is not.

Keyword stuffing, if you didn’t know, is inserting as many of your keywords into a web page as possible. You put them where ever you can so the search engines will find them and read them. For example, if I were promoting a Seattle DUI lawyer site I’d write “Seattle DUI attorney” “Seattle DUI defense attorney” “Seattle DUI lawyers” etc. until I had all the words I could think of.

And this used to work back in the day when the search engines weren’t as sophisticated. And it created a deluge of web sites dedicated only to keywords. There would be no content, nothing worth reading, only keywords. And it was designed to get the search engines attention. And in a way it did.

Over time, these keyword stuffed pages began ranking high on search engine results, and the search engines started to get a little mad about that. You see, the search engines don’t care who’s on top. What they care about is when you search Seattle DUI lawyer you find a bunch of great information on Seattle DUI lawyers. Keyword stuffed pages weren’t providing that experience. So something had to change.

The change came in the form of not only recognizing when keyword stuffing was happening and not accounting for it, but actually penalizing sites that were deemed to be stuffing keywords. The search algorithms started to change to recognize when this was going on and take action.

Because keyword stuffing is not only ineffective but actually harmful to your site’s reputation with the search engines, it is important to make sure you aren’t engaging in activities that look like keyword stuffing. The goal should be good content, a few keywords, and lots of backlinks.

A Good Domain Name Should Tell People What You Do Not Who You Are

February 4th, 2010

I’m a Seattle DUI lawyer. Most of my clients are one time clients. They don’t need me or want to know about me until they get into trouble. To find people like me most turn toward the internet. To make sure people can find me, I’ve had to figure out how to get a good internet presence.

But being seen by people isn’t easy. There can be a lot of competition out there. For example, a Google search of Seattle DUI attorney returns 339,000 results. This means I am competing against those results to be seen by potential customers. That’s a lot of competition!

And to make matters worse, no one really knows what the magic formula is to get to the top of the list of websites for a particular search term. We have some good ideas, but we really don’t know what the magic formula is for certain.

People out there have discovered, though, some things that they know work to help your site look better in the eyes of Google. The most basic of these things is to pick a domain name that lets Google know what your business is about (which means it is not the name of your company).

For example, let’s say your DUI law firm name is Buckley and Marsh. People might know your firm and respect it, but most people probably don’t. Because of that, when people get a DUI and go out looking for a DUI defense lawyer, they don’t type in “Buckley and Marsh” for a lawyer, they type in “Seattle DUI defense attorney.” This is why your domain name must be what you do, not who you are.

Why is this? Well, Google doesn’t have the time to go and read every website that is out there. To make sure the top results are the best results, they send out bots to read web pages. They decide whose site is best based on what they see. A website name that describes what people will search for lets these bots know that your site is about Seattle DUI lawyers and not Smith and Jones.

When you start looking into website options for your small business, don’t forget to pick a good domain name that describes what you do, not who you are. It will help immensely.

Building your small business should be fun and exciting, not boring and loathsome. I’m a Seattle DUI defense attorney excited to see your business succeed. So get to it!

A Test Case On The Effectiveness Of Google Adwords

February 3rd, 2010

I am a Seattle DUI attorney. This means a couple of things. First, it means I know how to deal with the cops. Second, it means I know how to help you if you are charged with a Seattle DUI. And third, it means I have to constantly cultivate my client base from the general public.

I found out rather quickly that there are two arenas I need to excel in to market effectively – online and offline. My online efforts include things like website optimization, starting a blog, and doing other things to get my DUI website noticed by Google. It also included an adwords campaign.

Google adwords is the tool Google allows people to use to advertise on the search pages of their site (among other places). If you go to Google and search for Seattle DUI defense attorney you’ll see ads across the top and the right side of the page. You can pay to have your ad there. But I was skeptical because I’d read somewhere that a lot of people just skip over them.

What I found out after a few months online ad campaigning didn’t surprise me much. The stories about people skipping over these ads is mostly true. People know the ads are there and every day are becoming more and more conditioned to just skip over them (I am even that way). So, the clicks that you see are limited in number.

One thing I didn’t totally take into account, however, was how easy it is to turn a profit with adwords. With adwords, you only pay every time someone clicks on your ad. Otherwise it just sits out there, waiting. You can set a monthly budget so you don’t lose your shirt, and all it takes is one click to help you make money.

For me, I’d say Google adwords works. It is inexpensive, it is efficient, and it doesn’t take much money going out to get a lot of money coming. It is even more effective in a business like mine, where people might not know a criminal attorney or would be afraid to ask their friends if they have any recommendations. That’s when they go to Google, type in Seattle DUI lawyer, and start clicking away.

Why The iPhone Is Great For Starting A Law Firm

February 2nd, 2010

It may not seem like it until you actually get into it, but starting a business involves a lot of touch choices. And starting a law firm is no different. One of the choices you’re going to have to make is what kind of a cell phone you are going to use. Technology can save you a lot of money, and making the right choice is important. Read on to see what I did.

I don’t want to get too far, though, without letting you know who I am. I’ll be 30 years old this. My law firm has been up and running for about 8 months, and before I started my law firm I was an associate attorney at a couple of small law firms and worked for the government for a bit. I’m right on the line between generation X and generation Y. I love new technology and am always excited to try it out.

The iPhone is great for starting a law firm for several reasons. First, it can instantly sync up your email and calendar no matter what your email provider is. I use Gmail and it took me about 30 seconds to set up my account on my iPhone. Same with my calendar. Now the both sync seamlessly with my computer. It allows me to not have to worry about dragging a paper calendar with me wherever I go.

Next, you have the world wide web at your beck and call. The iPhone is set up so that your experience on the internet is exactly the same as if you were sitting at your desk. This makes getting around very easy, particularly when you are looking for the statute you need or the latest sports score.

Finally, the iPhone is awesomely cool, and it makes you look cooler for having one. The applications you can have on your phone range from the very helpful (Washington state statutes) to the very fun (boxed in) to the purely fun (Facebook). If you think breezing around on the internet is fun, just wait until you discovery the applications that abound.

If you are thinking about how to start a law firm and are considering phone options, think of the iPhone. You won’t be disappointed. I haven’t been. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Internet Marketing And Keywords Using Seattle DUI Attorney As An Example

January 23rd, 2010

Businesses used to love the yellow pages. They were an easy way to reach a lot of people that needed exactly what you were offering. But since the advent of the Internet, a lot has changed. People aren’t using the yellow pages anymore. You know that. And you know the Internet is important, but you don’t know how to get people to find you.

Knowing and understanding the Internet is critical to the success of your business. But it all seems so complicated. And there are so many people trying to sell you so many things that you don’t know who to believe. But you know it’s time to learn something.

Like we said, there are a lot of people out there suggesting a lot of different things for seeing internet success. And it’s hard to know who to believe. But don’t fret, it’s all intuitive. And this article will help to get you there. An example usually works best, so I’m going to use a Seattle DUI lawyer and what he would look for to maximize Internet exposure.

The initial thing to remember is that, a lot like the yellow pages, customers aren’t going to be looking for you by name. They are going to be looking for the thing that they need or the thing that you do. That’s what you need a Google presence for. The yellow pages probably called this something like categories. In Google the word is keyword.

To use our example, if you were the owner of Woods Law firm practicing DUI law in Seattle, people searching for you in the yellow pages would have found you under Seattle DUI lawyer. In Google, this is the same way it’s going to work, except people will type it in instead of finding it in a book.

To get the most exposure, you need to figure out what searches will get you customers (also known as keywords). For our example, this might be Seattle DUI attorney, DUI attorney Seattle, DUI defense attorney, and on and on. See where I’m going here? Good.

So, when you are talking to people who are helping you out with your Internet marketing, make sure you know what keywords you want. Don’t let people make you first in Google for your law firm name when you want Seattle DUI lawyer.

Getting your Seattle DUI lawyer keyword to the top is possible. All it takes is focus, smarts, and the right Seattle DUI defense lawyer keywords.
