Information About External Hard Drive

March 5th, 2010

For data storage and backup, external hard drive have become a useful addition to many personal computers. There are a few points to keep in mind when using or purchasing these.

Earlier models were near exact replicas of the hard drives inside of personal computers. They had mounted disks that recorded through mechanical movement. These models were and are susceptible to skipping when bumped. Newer models have gone to flash based storage, like the thumb drive or Ipod, and resist errors from skipping much better. These newer models have also evolved to be competitive when it comes to storage space, currently carrying 250 gigabytes or more. Moore’s law has also taken hold, bringing the prices below one hundred dollars.

Flash based drives are smaller than mounted disk style drives and have internal moving parts. These solid state devices use USB or Firewire connection cables to interface with the computer. Through this platform, any newer PC can connect to the drive regardless of operating system. Solid state memory currently top out at around one to two terrabytes for the more expensive models.

Applications, including operating systems can be stored on external drives. To use them multiple machines, the programs must be configured to leave no finger prints specific to a certain computer. Many web sites list portable versions of programs that are free and open source .

Converting CD and DVD collections to digital files can quickly eat up memory on a PC that would otherwise be used for processing. By transferring the files to large capacity external drives, machine performance can be improved by freeing up ram and virtual memory space.

Viruses are a danger to keep in mind with any file transfer situation. Portable virus scanning software are a great idea for thumb drives and external hard drive. Incoming files are scanned for infections and the user is warned. Aside from this, always keep your anti-virus ware up to date.
